I just got back from digging an 1860s privy in Pottsville, PA. My friend and I were trying to get permission by asking on doors but no one seemed to be home so we drove around looking for houses where the previous owner had been evicted or the house was in too rough shape for anyone to live in. We found a nice double row home with no one living in either side so we began to probe. The one privy turned out to be 12 feet deep and about 4X5 wide. We got a lot of really nice bottles pictured below and we had a great time! After we finished that hole we found another one in the next yard over which is most likely the pontiled hole for that home too. By the time it got dark today we were down 4 feet and pulling up local broken squat sodas. I wish I had some pictures of the actual dig but I didn’t bring my camera along.

Here’s a picture of my favorite bottles! I got a nice smooth base Cathedral pickle, a rare Golden Bitters Geo. C. Hubbel cabin shaped bottle and a cobalt C. Ellis Son & Co. Philada medicine. Instead of doing picks on the bottle after they were dug, we aggraded that I would take all the bottles except for the local Pottsville ones which were mostly pontiled green squat sodas. Value wise, it was about even because he got some really nice ones. I wish I could get a picture of them but they are at his house.

Here’s a picture of the inks we found. I have always wanted to dig a school house ink and finally got the chance! I also got an open pontil Laughlin’s And Bushfield Wheeling VA ink, J&IEM igloo ink, and a funny shaped one that says Alling’s and is dated 1871.

Here’s some of the pontiled bottles. The Genuine Essence is not purple glass but what ever is in it looks cool so I left it in there. The pontiled puffs are unmarked but some are really neat shapes. I hope you like the pictures and if I get some more goodies out of the other hole I will post some pics.

Those bottles are great! I figure you've got at least $800 there! I hate to think what must have been broken in that hole.

I am glad you all liked my finds. The semi cabin bitters is a really nice looking bottle although it has a small crack on the side. Tony, when I get the photos of the sodas I will be sure to post them. Yes, it was pretty exciting pulling out such old bottles and especially figural ones!

I finally got back and dug the other privy to find that it was empty and all that was in it was broken pontiled shards. It must have been dipped at one time because it was only about 4 feet deep while the other was about 10 feet deep. The one thing that has been bothering me all these years of digging is where the heck did the privy dippers dump the “poop” and bottles???? For any newbie’s who don’t know what dipping a privy means… after a privy would get full they would either dig a new one or hire someone to clean it out. Has any one ever found a dump where it was all privy dippings? I have never found one but I assume it would be far out in the woods where no one goes because of the smell.

The honey dipper dumps have to be somewhere, that's for sure. Maybe they were dumped in really deep holes. I don't know of anyone who ever found one. Honey dipper dumps are the stuff that dreams are made of. It would be like finding Atlantis, El Dorado, or the elephant graveyard.

Actually a honey dippers dump will suck. A few friends of mine did some research into this and found that they were actually sifting out the bottles and glass and selling them for cullette. the one dump they were able to find was just pure crap with lots of pipes and marbles in it but almost no glass at all. I guess there was no market for used pipes and marbles.

Chris...that may be true for towns like Baltimore where they had a Glass Works operating....Many towns had no place to sell cullet.

hmmmm....racking my brains for possible sites.

After how many reminders, my friend finally sent me a picture of the bottles he got out of the hole. I think he may have got the better half of the deal but they are all for his collection so it’s not like he is going to sell them and make money off of them. It’s a shame that the cobalt decorated picture has some small cracks and chips! Hope you all enjoy the pics.

Don’t worry Mr. Diver, this was a once in a life time dig. These kinds of digs don’t happen very often to me, I just got lucky on this one. Now pull your gear out of the garbage, put it on, and hit the water because I have seen some of the bottles you have found and I am very impressed with them. No find is to small or as I would say, s***y to post on here.
