Hello everyone- A couple of years ago I found a very interesting dump at the bottom of a very deep ravine in a heavily wooded area. Turns out it was originally a gravel pit in 1800s which was closed down and filled in with refuse in the 20s. The newest thing Ive found in there is mid 20s, and Ive pockets of much older stuff. The very overgrown dump covers an area of aprox. 1x2 acres and avg depth is about 6 ft. I love this place not only because its a trove of the unexpected and because of the locale- I can spend all day there with nothing for company but the woodpeckers, squirrels, foxes, and the creaking 50ft. cottowoods. It can be a little frustrating because theres no age gradation- the older stuff is mixed right in with the new. The most common decent bottle is embossed 20s milks of which there are tons, including a group of Wiest Dairy with a full embossed baby. Other good finds- over 30 label underglaze stoneware ginger beers, 2 scarce green pharmacy poisons Paine Drug Co., 1 mint very early ovoid saltglaze jug - no decoration, nuts!, 2 ss qt cokes-Rochester, 1 squat blob Clydeglassworks beer, a rare mint libertybell candycontainer 76 centenial expo, 1 qt Buffalo Lithia Water, maybe the best a dark teal vase shaped perfume wth sterling leaves and flowers - the silver was black but it cleaned up well, a few cobalt Laxols, salt glaze bean pot or mustard jars, and a lot of oddities- marbles, bisque doll parts, an almost mint flowblue turreen, lamp parts, insulators, early car parts, a cool milk glass elephant ornament, etc Broken - a Dr. Townsends iron pontil ed teal , a Binninger like handled urn , so theres obviously old stuff in there. Ive barely scratched the surface of this place and I just know theres a pocket or two from someone in the 20s who cleaned out thier drugstore or attic and maybe Ill find my dream bottle- a W.C Sweets BlackOil Rochester! I guy can always dream...

Okie - Im in the great lakes area of western N.Y. Some hikers had mentioned to me that they found some old bottles on the ground while passing through the area- little did they know! Whe I first went there I couldnt tell how much of it was dump because it was so overgrown with creepers, ferns,etc... Thats why its best to look for sites in this part of the country in the early spring and late fall. The site turned out to be twice as big as I inititiall thought- which is why now if I find a new dump I do a very thourogh reconnasance of the area. This is a relativly early settled area late 1700 early 1800s- Im about 30 miles from Rochester N.Y, its also one of the areas where bottle collecting took off early and its been hit hard - except for privys which is my next project. I was telling Mike the other day that the stories I hear from the guys who dug in the 50s,6os,and 70s make me want to cry- a guy I know who dug here in the early-mid 60s sold his whole collection in the 70s for 10 grand. I think I like being 'out in nature' as much as finding bottles well almost as much. Any way happy hunting! J.D

Hey Deepwoods, have you dug there in the springtime yet? I've had to wear a net over my head up here in a couple of spots next to marshes - the black flies and mosquitos fight each other over who gets to eat the nut digging! lol Sounds like a great spot you have there!

Norm - This spot is amazingly insect free - Im not sure why , maybe because theres no water sources nearby. I did hit a nest of very p.od yellow jackets 1 day that chased me a good 50 yds through the woods and ended up stinging me 4 or 5 times - I kept stopping thinking I was out of range and they kept landing on my head, arms, and legs - it mustve looked funny as hell. I know what you mean about Maine though - I went fishing and camping in Houlton one summer and forgot repellant- biggest mistake of my life - the infernal skeeters drove me mad. J.D

JD, my sister and husband lived a few years up by Wolf Pond, just past Tupper Lake, and the no-seeums and themthatbites were unbelievable! She said they really only got a good month of bug-free summer a year. I guess you get the 'lake effect' pretty good where you are. This has been a nasty winter temperature-wise, we had no snow cover when a few weeks of 10 degrees to 10 below degrees hit. The frost reached almost 6' in some towns in SOUTHERN Maine, peoples leach fields were freezing up. I'm just ouside of Portland, our winters are actually not all that bad, just long! lol

Hello all - I was just going to mention that when I started digging in this site I expected or hoped to find alot of Warner bottles - being so close to Rochester, but so far Ive just found 2 Log Cabin Extracts 1 large and 1 small. Another treat has been a few very nice German figurines. You wonder how some of this stuff got thrown away- maybe people were mad at Germany?

If any one wants a good place to dig in Enid Oklahoma I know where a place is you will need to find a place called goverment springs park there are two parts of the park go to the south part on the south side of the highway its on then park in the park by this bridge thats in the park walk across the bridge and go into the trees that are in the park there is a big gully going into the middle ove the park dig there you will find bottling works bottles from all over that area including some Indian territories and Oklahoma Territories, Enid Coke bottles form the a period from 1990's up to 1910 and you can walk around the dump and pick up cork tops costantly there just laying on the ground most of the ones on the ground a re just plain cork top medicines.
