Well, I called my aunt this morning and asked if I could probe around her late 1870's house. She gave me the go ahead and I was digging in no time. I probed out a hole close to the present alley and sidewalk and hit a dripping wet hole. Bingo I thought! I got down about four feet and was getting a couple of nice layers until I hit 5 feet of clay that started at 2 feet. Then at 7 feet there was a 2" layer of cinders. Nice, I thought. The another foot of soupy clay. So, I probed and probed and probed and heard nothing and seen nothing but yellow on my rod. I closed it up and started another wet hole on the other side of the sidewalk. Thank Goodness she owns a duplex! I know this was a hole because the concrete was sunken and broken right over it. I like those kind. I tore up a bit of cement and started probing. This time I hit the water at 3 feet instead of 7 feet, whew! I got the hole down about 3 feet and the water started pouring in. I probed again and ahhh the sweet sound of crunchies! You know what I have to do in the morning. Bail Bail Bail! here's a pic of the spot after I dug. I think I do a fine cosmetic job!
