My first Peoria, IL Iron Pontiled Soda! (and other bott... - 9/12/2011 9:29:37 PM    Plumbata Posts: 1658 Joined: 12/4/2007 Status: offline September 11th was a very good day here in central Illinois. The local bottle show once again made its annual appearance and my father and I were on the road early to make sure that we got there before all the good stuff got gobbled up. I walked through the rows briskly, but was impeded by several of the dealers who haven't seen me in a while and wanted to catch-up. Thankfully it didn't stop me from snapping up the absolute best blown Peoria bottle in the entire show! (a good collector/dealer friend had a 400+ local ACL, but I'm not really into those) I couldn't believe my good fortune when I made it to the last row and saw this bottle sitting on the table of a 40+ year collector and club member, with what I considered a very reasonable price tag of 150.00. After bringing my father over to scrutinize the bottle with me, I decided that it had to become part of the collection. "R. Hickey Peoria ILLS" I told the dealer that I wanted to buy it, and he said that I could have it for 125.00! I didn't try to bring him down or anything, but perhaps he remembers when I was a prepubescent kid drooling over the bottles at the club back in the 90s, and wanted to help out my collection. Really nice thing he did for me. Now correct me if I am wrong, but being 1 of the 3 IP bottles known from Peoria, even if the most prevalent one, makes it somewhat desirable as far as pontiled sodas go. I'd take it over 10 Philly IPs anyday! I can't imagine that I could have gotten it for less than at least double what i was charged if it showed up in eBay, but I have no actual experience regarding this bottle's market value (aside from the 150 I was willing to pay). More shots: And next to a smooth-base R. Hickey in considerably worse shape and with some darn weak embossing: In addition to the Peoria Pontil, I got a beat and sickly tooled-top Seitz (perhaps one cast-away by rick and his crew? ) for a buck and the "Umatilla Indian Relief" from Detroit with a few flakes off the top for 5. A pretty good day I'd say! I've been digging a decent bit too, just haven't posted anything lately. In my humble opinion, that bottle is way way better. Sure, for a smooth based example, I'd say that it might be about right - but graphite pontilled - you did really well. Those things never get newer. And even if it is common (which I doubt) every collector will pay for early pontilled stuff. Nice purchase! (in reply to epackage) Post #: 4

Nothing beats a local pontiled soda. I love the font style on early Midwestern sodas like that one. Based on my experience with rare, local iron pontil sodas, I would deduce that you got a helluva deal. The last two from my collecting area were an aqua one from Huntingdon, PA that went for $860, and an emerald green one from Lewistown that brought $770. I bought the Lewistown one, and was happy to get it for that. Now, we Central PA collectors are a bit insane, but that's cool. Any pontil soda that is at least uncommon and not from a huge city is a deal at $125. They're just not getting any easier to find. B. St. Clair from Peoria.  That was from a fun dig I did up there way back.  Unfortunately the land owner changed their mind when they saw the huge mound of excavated dirt.  We were just getting into the pontils.   And had several feet to go.  The last bottle out was a pontiled barrel.  Man were we ****ed.  Some day I will go back… _____________________________ Collector of Druggist from everywhere – particularly those in color, with a graphic or pontiled.
