I was hoping that all the folks bidding in the veterinary auction would be going for the bright graphics on the boxes and bottle labels and leave the unlabeled bottles alone. I bid on the only pontiled bottle and a Gargling oil I had been after for awhile. They both went for their starting bids!!! I was so surprised to get them. Then the auctioner ( a vet collector) said he had just replaced one of his pontiled vet bottles with a labeled one...would I like to buy the unlabeled one? I did not have to think hard on that one as I had never even heard of it.
Mathewson's Horse Liniment 50 cents, op
Youatt's Gargling Oil Comstock Brothers, New York, smooth base
McEckron's R.B. Liniment, N.Y. op ( R.B. stands for Ring Bone)
The McEckron's has a little bit of stain but other than that they are must about mint.

Youatt was very famous in the first half of the 1800's for his books on raising livestock. I have three of his books..two written by him and one written by Clater and rewritten by Youatt. The Comstock company probably just called it Youatts Gargling Oil to take advantage of his name as there is no evidence of Youatt actually being involved in veterinary nostrums.

.............and the fact that Youatt died in the 1840's. I am not sure that there are any of these Comstock bottles that pre-date his death.
He is also one of those cases where he made a great impact on the veterinary profession in England and in the US ( he was English) but was not a graduate of a veterinary school.
He was the son of a surgeon, trained for the ministry, and then went to work for man practicing veterinary medicine ( also a non graduate) in London. It wasn't until about 3 years before his death that he was awarded a diploma from a veterinary college even though he had more impact than any other person practicing vet med during that time.

The Youatt's is a classic Comstock bottle. I have sold a few of those pontil marked and smooth base.
If you want to read about the Comstock company try this ...
http://www.sil.si.edu/smithsoniancontributions/HistoryTechnology/pdf_lo/SSHT-0022.pdf

The Comstock Bros were famous for buying the rights to various patent medicines and marketing them from their giant company.
There is a good chance Youatt had a product or at least a preparation that they purchased. The Comstocks apparently originally immigrated from Sweden or other nordic country. THeir early name was Kolmstock but it seems they changed it to a more English sounding Comstock. THey were very shrewd businessmen.

What was the medicine you never heard of?
I have the other Mathewson's bottle for sale on my web site.
Do you have many vet medicine trade cards? There are many nice ones out there that are fairly cheep.

Now I need to find a pontiled version of the Youatt's bottle.

Have you noticed there were a lot of medicines named after famous horses?
Its tells you a bit about how people were thinking back then.
The 19th century was a horse centric era just as we are an automobile society.
Horses like Eclipse were the Ferraris of the day and their names were used to sell a lot of products.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclipse_(horse)

I like the comment "His jockey was John Oakley, supposedly the only jockey who could handle Eclipse's temperamental manner and running style of holding his nose very close to the ground."
That must have been a frightening beast to ride

Yes and I think it was Dr. Daniels that paraded that huge draft horse...I think his name was "Giant" but I am not sure. It was on a lot of his advertisements. Kind of like the equine Goodyear blimp.

I think Barnum's elephant Jumbo would be the Goodyear blimp of the 19th century
He was an advertising goldmine.

I have heard the famous horses made much more money at stud than they ever did racing. I dont really know much about the whole horsey thing. Some people are really into it.

I love old papers and magazines. I have a few but none that old.
Don and I worked for a man when we were first married. We took care of his Thoroughbred mares and foals in exchange for a garage apartment. He and his daddy had a lot of money, liked going to the races, so thought it would be "fun" to have a few of their own. Sheesh!
Anyway..they paid $75,000 each for the brood mares. The mares had to be transported by special, insured horse handlers to the stud farms. Where they paid room and board for them while they waited for the attention of the stallion. The stallion fees were in the tens of thousands. Most of the stallions are insured for millions.
These guys we worked for were only middle level players. The big money horses go for a lot more. This was all back in the early 80's. Prices could have gone up or down.

Those are really nice, early vet meds Melinda...I'd love to dig some like that!
