I got my first open pontil yesterday from Paul...(its' so cool & Paul is a pretty awesome guy) We had a great time on our privy dig!!

My new/old little prized bottle
It says Shaker fluid on one side and Extract Valerium on the other....which I guess was like valium or some anxiety type reducer back then...
      Musta stopped the SHAKES!!!!

Here's the bottom....sorry it's a bit blurry. I usually switch cameras when I take these pics...I take my old camera out to the sites and use the better one for the good bottle pics....But Chris had it with him

Thanks for the bottle Paul!!! I love it

The Valerian root is what Valium is made from.I buy the tea to help me sleep when I cant. Its a little bitter, but works good.

The Shakers were the religious cult that made the patent medicines.

Oh I see...I thought it was something to do with shaking...I know that some people with anxiety problems take valium I guess to calm the nerves...so I thought Shaker was referring to someones shakiness...
I Learn something new on this site about every 5 minutes!!

They made the Shaker style furniture, right?  The are not to be confused with the Quakers.  The term shaker on the bottle has nothing to do with having the shakes, but rather, the makers of the product.

Gunth is the medicine expert and was correct as usual: This bottle contained Dr.Brown's Shaker Fluid Extract of English Valerian, which was a popular medicine compounded by Dr.Brown(who was a Shaker) in the 1830's. The Shakers gave the distributorship rights to Edward Brinley & Co. of Boston around 1840. This pontilled bottle dates from the 1845-1855 period. Info courtesy of digrdaveb@aol.com

Amanda, check out Gunther's antique medicine site.  It's pretty cool and has a wealth of knowledge.

I'm biting at the bit to get out of work and go home and clean my bottles...I have to many errands to run right after I leave to!! Hmmmm to pay my bills or go home and clean my bottles????  Well I've got 38 minutes to decide lol!!

Shakers were a VERY odd group. They made a bunch of various patent medicines, furniture, and many other things. They were very industrious. There are numerous books written about them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakers

I gave up on retaining a few year ago. Now I just keep asking the same questions over and over...

. They were celibate right? Hard to keep a mixed religious community going if there are no young ones coming along.

"The Shakers built 500 settlements that attracted some 20,000 converts over the next century. Strict believers in celibacy, Shakers maintained their numbers through conversion and adoption of orphans. Turnover was very high"

funny but not unexpected

Valerian's mild tranquilizing power has made valerian a popular treatment for anxiety; in Europe, it is often prescribed for that purpose. Unlike diazepam (Valium) and alprazolam (Xanax), the drugs often prescribed for anxiety in the United States, valerian has few side effects.

Some people confuse valerian and Valium, believing that their similar names imply that they are somehow related. They are not. Valium is a synthetic drug, a member of the benzodiazepine family, while valerian is derived from a plant.

There is a connection, however. The herb and the drug seem to affect the brain in a similar fashion, binding to the same receptors. The differences are that valerian appears to be nonaddictive, and its effects tend to be (much) milder than those of Valium.
