Not sure I have seen a tumbler implemented like mine.
It is a direct drive with a variable motor controller (I got from a friend).
Its pretty compact and I can easily vary the spin rate with the control knob.

I use a rubberized U joint coupler to connect the roller.
Cheap pillow blocks, I didnt want to shell out the money for the bearing ones.

Very cool Matt. Love the direct drive variable speed. I get tired of changing belts around to attain the speed I want.  Thanks for sharing that pic.

PS. What have you got on the ass end to keep the can from working off? Is it just the end bearing?

Sometimes it stays on by itself, if it acts up I just drive a screw in and put a piece of copper pipe on it. Never had that much trouble to motivate me to make a better solution.

Hello Gunther    That is a nice setup you have!  Im in the process of setting up a tumbler of similar design. The idea of the DC motor and coupler is a great idea. This type of setup my be a little costly for most people considering making a tumbler compared to an AC motor with the belts and pulleys, but if you have the components readily available thats great. Right now I have the DC motor, speed control unit, Ingersoll Rand pillow block bearings and the precision Thompson shaft for the direct drive. This tumbler will also be used for spinning steel scuba tanks for internal cleaning of surface corrosion so it will be quite solid. There are a few more components needed to finish this unit up, I will post some pictures when it is completed. Thanks for posting the pics of your setup, very helpful. Tumbling cannisters will be the follow up project.
Best regards Vic

Hello, nice pics.  Is it cheaper(electricity) to run a DC motor than an AC motor?  I have heard that before.  Do you make your own stopples and base holders for holding the bottles in place?  thanks,   Paul

It matters what HP, gearing, efficiency, etc, etc they are. Given 2 with the same ratings the DC motor would use more power because you would have losses in the AC to DC conversion. The one I have uses very little power. On little motors like these its not going to make that much difference in cost to run.

I have made my own canisters but I have found the Jar Doctor ones are nicer and I use those even though they are pretty expensive.

Thank you for the information Gutherhess.  Working on making some rolling canisters myself right now.  Take care.   Paul
