Dug this too. Ain't got a clue what it is. It seems to be made of graphite, or something like that. It's about 5.25" long. Plumbata suggested it was a "cathode from the center of an old large dry-cell battery. They were often used as telephone batteries, but were also used in quack electrical medical devices and whatnot." I am inclined to agree, as I have no idea what it is in the first place!
