Hi all,

Man yesterday was a great day for me. I've been trying to get this bottle from a longtime collector friend for quite awhile now and was finally able to get it in a trade. I've never seen it before, and would love to know more about it but after lots of unsuccessful searching books, guides, and the web, I still haven't ever seen this example. I did find an article from N. Jenkins from 1878 advertising his product but that has been it so far. It has three sunken panels, an applied top and a really cool star embossed on the base. Just a great looking southern bottle.

N. Jenkins N.O.
Rheumatism & Gout
Annihilator

It stands 9 3/4" tall bu 2 3/4" square. I was really happy to get it! It's crude too in that the N. Jenkins panel is sunken in and concaved. He was always reluctant about selling it but I ended up making a trade on a particular bottle and it all worked out.

I'd love to know any thoughts or info anyone may have.

All the best,
~Tim

That's a great rare bottle.
Its listed on this website
http://www.weloveoldbottles.com/NewOrleans/Meds/meds.html
I cant remember seeing one sell.
There seem to be quite a few advertisements for it in N.O. newspapers.
Would you mind if I used your photo?

Matt, I did see that mention of it on their site. By the dimensions of the one they have, do you think it's the same style? I noticed the mentioned Neuralgia.

I did email them and asked if they happened to have a photo of their example. Hope to hear back about it.

I tried emailing them about another bottle but never got a response. Hope you have better luck.
They have a couple very rare N.O. medicines listed.

Thanks so much guys, I appreciate it. It really worked out good for me and there's a good story behind it too. Some of you may remember this thread...

http://www.antique-bottles.net/forum/m-378625/mpage-1/key-/tm.htm#378625

Well the guy I got this N. Jenkins bottle from is the one I got the fake John Ryan from. I've been talking to him on and off for quite awhile, and we talked about all that was discussed on that bottle. He hardly ever gets rid of anything, well anyhow he said he would take that bottle back in trade to me for something else that he had that I may want. Well i've wanted the N. Jenkins ever since I first seen it, but he really didn't want to get rid of it. After finding out what I did from some knowledgeable collectors (Chris for sure) about it, he said he would take that back for it. So I was very happy about it for finally getting the chance to get it, and also sending that enhanced bottle back to where I originally got it. I know he didn't know it was fake, it fooled me and another friend of mine that's been collecting a very long time. We never considered it at all at the time. He knows now too, and wanted to make things right he told me. That's the trade we ended up doing.

I know this one's real LoL

Thumbs up to your collector friend for doing the right thing. I've found that serious collectors who truly share our passion are the best people to deal with. I never worry much when dealing with a reputable collector, and most serious antique dealers I know are good people, as well. The few that would say "Too bad" are usually neither collectors nor serious dealers, but simply wheel-n-deal hustlers who try to peddle anything they can get free or cheap for a quick buck instead of holding an actual job. I know just a few of those, and I avoid 'em like the plague.

I'm glad to hear that you got the issue with the Ryan bottle resolved on good terms, plus you got a killer bottle for your collection.  ~Jim

glad you were able to dump that John Ryan. I hope no one else gets stuck with it.

I'm pretty sure it's not going anywhere. Hey I did hear back and got a couple photos of the N. Jenkins from that site. It's a totally different form, and like you mentioned, a different product. It's a more traditional med style 3" wide and 1 1/8" deep. The embossing isn't clear in the photos he sent, but i'll post them on here soon to show the difference.

All the best,
~Tim

Like I mentioned, you can't read the embossing from the photos but he said he had a hard time photographing it.

The embossing should read this on his example...

RHEUMATISM / GOUT & NEURALGIA / ANNIHILATOR. / (on front); N. JENKINS. / (on side) / NEW ORLEANS. / (on other side). Shape: rectangular. Base: plain. Lip type: square collar. Size 9" x 3" x 1-1/8". Color: amber.

Here are the pics he sent to me...

Thanks. Looks like yours is an earlier bottle. That must have been a later product.
