ORIGINAL: GuntherHess I dont know how porous the insides of those things are. If you buy one it might be good to keep a cork in it just in case there is mercury residue in it. Just in case. Ahhhh what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger. When I was 13-14 me and some of the boys built a nifty raft out of wood pallets and four plastic 55 gallon drums we borrowed from a local loading dock. Lashed it all together and pushed it into the Blackstone river, the most foul bit of water the textile industry ever produced. About half way out on a pond dammed on each end the whole thing began to unravel. Until that moment we were proud as peacocks and having a high ole time. Them the screming began. One of the front corner barrels dipped under water for a second then woooosh it flew fifteen feet in the air. It kind of hung there like a big blue flying elephant against the sunny summer sky. It was beautiful, really. We began paddling towards a little island, one kid was crying, two where just wild eyed and I was laughing like a loon. Never made it. The other front barrel just kind of floated away, two went in, me and the other kid in the back just looked at each other and slowly sank in to our waists. I had my brother's swanky Buck knife in my coat pocket and i felt it just slip away. Now I knew if I went home without his knife it would be my doom, or at the very least a good fist fight, so I had to dive. had to be 20 feet deep, eyes open in that hell, i was down there a long time. Took a mouth full of water but I felt the case and snatched it up. Swallowed some of that crap, and by the time i surfaced everyone was standing on the island. Thought you drowed yourself Rick someone said. Had to back stroke to the island. Stuck on the island we had to climb a railroad bridge support or swim. We climbed. Felt sure one of us would die because it was the high open tied monster we all crossed a million times. Made you dizzy just walking the thing and seeing the water below you. We all made it, bro got his knife back and I got a slap in the mouth for ruining yet another pair of sneakers. Now if drinking that crap hasn't sprouted tumors a little mecury vapors is a snap FAR OUT STORY! YEP THEM BROTHERS CAN BE TUFF. MINE COULD PICK ON ME,BUT HE WOULDN'T LET NO BODY ELSE! MAN,IF I NEEDED BACK UP,HE WAS THERE! FEARLESS! YEP,THE CREEK HERE IS ALFUL TOO! WALKED DOWN IT LOOKING FOR BOTTLES AND BUBBLES OF SULPHUR SMELLING CRAP CAME UP AND I GOT OUT! I BET THE NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLE WE RAN OFF FROM HERE WOULD SURE BE PROUD ! WE TOOK A BEAUTIFUL CREEK WITH 9LB TROUT IN IT AND MADE IT INTO WATER THAT EVEN SMALL FISH CAN BARELY LIVE IN. MAN,THAT IS PROGRESS! BUT WE HAD JOBS! MAKING THINGS LIKE NAPALM FOR THE NAM WAR. YES I WOULD TAKE MY CHANCES WITH [A LITTLE!] MURCURY OVER NAPALM! I THINK .
