Need help identifying this - 7/11/2007 8:08:09 PM    Jim1870 Posts: 243 Joined: 7/7/2007 Status: offline I've just discovered the new hobby by way of my back yard, which appears to be an old dump site - bottles everywhere.  Most are common or local druggist, etc. I'm learning as I go.  I can't seem to find any info on this one.  It is embossed with "Chas. RE: Need help identifying this - 7/11/2007 8:22:03 PM    Jim1870 Posts: 243 Joined: 7/7/2007 Status: offline Yes,I came about it quite by accident.  I live in an 1870 house in Cincinnati - turns out the back yard is full of bottles, chards, marbles,etc.  I've just begun to dig it and have come up with 110 intact bottles so far.  It will take me a year or two at the rate I'm going.  Most of my finds have been at less than 2 feet deep (maybe some erosion?).  I dug one small area to about 5 foot and continued to find bottles - who knows. I am in Brown County, Ohio.  Cincinnati sits on a dump I think. I used to dig on the bank of the Ohio River in the 70s on the back side of the Castilinni Trucking Co. if you know where that is or was. What I am seeing in this picture puts me in the mind the house might have been built on a covered over dump, or it is one that just happens to be at the back of the yard.. I have a lot of what appears to be dump area to still dig.  About 3/4 of the back side of my yard has turned up bottles at a shallow (1-1 1/2 ft) depth.  If I understand correctly, the privy(s) should be separate from this area. RE: Need help identifying this - 7/13/2007 8:59:40 AM    appliedlips Posts: 1475 Joined: 1/30/2005 Status: online     Jim,   Great finds,and talk about saving on gas!I wish I had a dump in my backyard.Your finds look to date around 1900-1910.I am not familiar with the Beer but I would guess it is a product of Cincinnati.White Beer (Weiss Beer)was the German brewers attempt to make a lighter beer to meet the taste demands of us snobby Americans.Most of the bottles embossed Weiss Beer I have dug date to the 1890-1910 era.You may or may not have a privy as some large cities including Cincinnati had early sewers in some neighborhoods.If you do you could be in for an adventure.Cincinnati has some of the deepest privies anywhere,have heard of some going 40+ feet..They also can be some of the best producers anywhere.Probes do work,and if you ever want a hand finding and digging the privy,shoot me an email and if I get down that way I will give you a hollar.Great to have you as a member,and welcome to this great hobby.Doug < Message edited by appliedlips -- 7/13/2007 7:10:03 PM > (in reply to Jim1870) Post #: 18

RE: Need help identifying this - 7/13/2007 8:02:43 PM    appliedlips Posts: 1475 Joined: 1/30/2005 Status: online         Jim,       I apologize,I somehow looked at your other photos but not the beer in this thread.It is most certainly earlier than 1890,probably late 70's early 80's.Is it embossed HGCO on the base?This stands for Hemingray Glass Co. which started across the river in Covington and later moved To Cincy and then Muncie,Ind.The bottle is listed in the Ohio Bottle Book as being from Cincinnati and valued at $40-$50.This is a 1999 price,so I would guess $50+.Great bottle,and sorry about my lack of attention.Also,didn't mean to scare you with the 40ft. number this would be the exeption.15-20ft. would probably be a better average.Doug < Message edited by appliedlips -- 7/13/2007 8:05:27 PM > (in reply to Jim1870) Post #: 20
