Found out the Scoop on the Little's White Oil, This bottle dates 1837-1866 and was a Horse Liniment. Here is the results of my investigation on this bottle: The Company was owned by two Brothers, T.W. and C.E Little. In an 1879 Jones County history book, on page 690, it reads: “Mr. Little went to Albemarle Co., Va. in 1842 where he was engaged in the drug business for many years; he also engaged for many years in selling and establishing agencies for the sale of a liniment [oil] of which he was proprietor; during this time he spent many years in traveling, especially through the Southern states; he came to Jones Co. in February, 1866.” In 1866, the Scottsville economy was at its worst point in history. The Union army had just finished coming through town and burning and stealing supplies for their part in the Civil War. Only a year after this invasion, Scottsville was having trouble getting its businesses back up and running. The town’s population declined as many people moved west in search of a better life. Furthermore, the location of the Little’s old business in Scottsville was one of the main sections of town set on fire by the Union soldiers; no wonder T.W. Little left town! T.W. and C.E. Little of Scottsville packed each bottle with instructions for its use as a horse liniment: "Sprains, Swellings, and Rheumatism: Rub freely with the Oil night and morning, when convenient warm it by the fire. For Saddle and Collar Galls: It is not necessary to wash; apply the White Oil once or twice daily." Accompanying these directions were testimonials dating from 1837-1852 from men who pronounced White Oil use as a 'wonderful cure.' Following are two 1848 testimonials of interest from Scottsville: October 10, 1848 Mr. Little, From a trip of 200 miles in the month of June, my horse became very galled, his shoulders and back extremely sore. On his return, I was advised of your WHITE OIL being a sure and speedy remedy. Having to take a trip immediately to the Virginia Springs, which I did, starting from home in very warm weather, about the 25th of June, I confess that I had very little faith in its benefitting my horse under the circumstances. I nevertheless procured a bottle of your OIL, and persisted in the use of it during the trip, and to my astonishment and gratification, in four or five days, my horse's shoulders and back was healed, and I hereby confidently recommend it in similar cases. John S. Martin October 9, 1848 Mr. Little, I have been using your WHITE OIL for some time on my horses with entire success, and I determined to use it on my boy's leg which was broken a few days ago, and the result was that it reduced the swelling almost instantly, and made a cure of the leg in much less time than usual. In fact the boy was walking about in three weeks. I thereby cheerfully recommend it as the best remedy I have ever tried for diseased horses, as well as for pains and swellings on a man. This info was found at the Scottsville Museum site.
