Hey Steve,

Welcome to the A-BN, and thanks for bringing this beauty.

Have you seen Tod's page?

You may wanna Look Here! If not, This Might Interest you.

I wanna see more pictures of yours, all close up and well lit, please. Lip and embossing details and the obligatory base shot, would be added delights.

Great second at bat, man. I wanna know the backstory, too.

The opposite side is embossed Crowleyville New Jersey, established by Samuel Crowley in 1851.  The McKearin book lists the glass house as having been in business from 1851 to 1866 when it burned.  It was bought in 1852 and renamed the Atlantic Glass Works. The base is iron pontiled.

It was found in a privy of a three story brick California gold rush hotel built in the spring of 1850. That was in 1978, did not take many pictures back then but had a camera on this one.  This is a pic of the top of the layer before we pulled any bottles out.  The layer started at about 3 feet and went to six feet.  Many good bottles were found.  I do not remember any broken bottles in the hole.  One for the ages.

Welcome Carpetbagger, and thank you for posting the pic, it is one of my favorite bottles as well (not that I have ever had one). I'm trying to remember, was Neptune Glass Works in N.J.? I remember seeing one of those bottles auctioned off a few years back.
Post more photos of any other digs you get, we love to see them.
How long until we get a Uranus joke, won't take long I'm sure. (maybe that was it)

Steve,....great bottle and I love that shot down the privy....I tried googling the Neptune glass works for some history, and came up empty, except for a vague mention of this amazing pickle being attributed to them...(about the 5th page in...) I also found this brief snip about it that I've attached below... Thanks for showing that bottle.

This town is supposed to have stood where the state run "Crowley's Landing" picnic area is today in Wharton State Forest, Washington Township. Samuel Crowley ran two different glassworks there although there is some uncertainty as to whether it was Samuel or Samuel, jr.. Crowley had big plans for the town, and tried to sell big city investors on the idea to no avail. On his four hundred acres he erected his first glassworks in 1851; there were also stores, a hotel, and of course homes for the employees. One plant employed twelve blowers, and he even had plans for a canal to the Delaware. However, his glasshouses proved unprofitable when he failed to attract the necessary investment and sold out to a New York group who renamed his glassworks the 'Atlantic Glass Works.' There were several fires, the last of which occurred in 1866. Although it was abandoned, the plant stood until it finally collapsed in 1874, the same year the devestating fire occurred up the road at Batsto. (At the Crowleytown glassworks, it has been said the very first mason jar was made, but I can not verify this). Historian William McMahon claims to have recorded the following leases from vol. 38 of the Wharton Title concering Crowleytown:
  • 1862 from Isaiah Weeks and Samuel Crowley to Crowleyville Glass company, two lots and fourteen houses
  • 1866 Isaiah Weeks to Burlington, Atlantic, Cape May, and Philadelphia Glass Company
  • 1869 from John Dougherty, the President of the company, to John Dougherty, director and "practical glass maker."

After the operation failed, Crowleytown became another Pine Barrens ghost town.
Although by the 1870s it seems there was no longer any industry in Crowleytown, as late as the mid 1890s there were still some residents in the township who called that place home. The following list is excerpted from Poll Books in the possession of Batsto Historic Site, from elections that were held in 1892 and 1894. Several voters appear with their place of residence listed as Crowleytown.

1892
1894

Alanson Cobb
William Cobb

Joseph M. Birdsall
Robert Ford

William S. Wills (?)

Has anyone seen the porter bottle with the eagle on it?

Never seen or heard of the porter bottle.  I have seen two other of the schnapps type bottle besides the one I have.  Both were found in California, one in SF and the other in coastal northern California.  I have heard rumor of two other schnapps types that were reported to be found in the California gold rush, but have not seen them.  Also seen one damaged {cracks } schnapps example in a prominent NJ collection.  The porter with an eagle would be awesome,. first I have heard of it.

I have no idea about the pickle other than to say it is amazing, truly what bottle dreams are made of.  I have never seen a shard that color but there might have been similar ones a the at the Arabia steamship museum in Kansas City.

Steve,...thanks for your comments,...That Arabia steamboat museum (and story) is truely  a fascinating thing...I was truely amazed when I saw how well preserved everything they had found was...(including the pickle bottles!) It just blows my mind that all that stuff had been submerged, then later buried , since 1856...What an awesome time capsule.
