I was visiting with a experienced bottle digger who pulled up over 5000 bottles in the Tacoma, Washington dump, and I was told by him and his wife that they used a ski pole to probe with. They just removed the basket at the end of the ski pole, and had a great probe, complete with a pre-sharpened end. I was thinking about this, and I truly think that this idea is genious! It saves anyone who has an old ski pole from having to buy or make their own probe from expensive materials. As this bottle digger put it, the pole "Is very sturdy." For someone who has found 5000+ bottles, I'd have to say that this method works well. What does everyone else think?

It may be ok if your ski pole is made of metal but I thought they where made of a fiberglass type stuff ? probes for most digging need a knob on the end to help it go into the ground but for digging in a large tip they may be ok for finding the undug bits.

I agree its and alright idea, but I cant see geting much leverage with out the "T" handle. It might be good for probing a hole for that has already been located for more bottles and size, besides probes are not realy that expensive.

Say....Now I know what I can do with those 6 sets of ski poles I picked up by the curb during last autumns clean-up week here in my town. Seriously though, I think I'll give it a shot in some of those areas that aren't so compacted. By the way, if your town has a fall and spring 'clean-up' week, it's a great time! I've picked up some great pieces of antique furniture, working motors for my bottle tumbler, raw material for probes and last year 5 unopened cases of ball mason jars from the 1960's! I almost look forward to spring clean-up week as much as when the frost is finally out of the ground so we can start that first dig of the season. The frost was particularly bad here in southern Maine this year, little snow lot's of below 0 temps. It really makes me wonder how those privy diggers in NY and PA seem to be able to dig year round!
