Guys,

I am new to the forum and live near Ottawa, Canada.   I was hoping somebody could help me indentify the kind and approximate age of a bottle I found while boating on the Ottawa River.

I have included a pic of the bottle and here are the basic facts I know.

   - 8.5 inches tall
   - Made of clear (non coloured) glass
   - Has a crown top
   - Seam runs full lenght of the bottle, including the lip
   - It looks like it has a pontil or finishing mark on the bottom
   - Has lots of bubbles, defects and a lop sided bottom (more glass on one side)
   - Most importantly it is embossed

THIS BOTTLE IS THE PROPERTY OF A. HUCKELS & Co OTTAWA, ONT

Any ideas of the purpose and age of the bottle?
Any idea of who "A. Huckels" was and what he did in the Ottawa area?

Here is the pic:

Welcome to the forum! Bottles like that were usually soday. I can tell you that it probabyl dates to the 1920's give or take 10 years. I dont know anything about bottles from canada There are a couple of people on here that might be able to help. The mark on the base is referred to as a suction scar and was found on most early machine made bottles. Nice bottle!

edit--in your pic it looks like an aqua color?

Thanks Tony I suspected that it was a type of Soda bottle.  1920
sounds about rigth to based on what I have read and seen.  The bottle
was found embedded in a beech which also supports the idea that it was
a refreshment container.

I was really hoping to find out who A. Huckels was and what was in the bottle.  Oh well maybe another day.

I don't think the bottle is aqua, it is very transparent with only the slightest hot of green in the densest parts.  My understanding is with aqua the green is unmistakeable.

Not neccasarily...any hint of green or blue is considered aqua. It is a lot more obvious when its bright though Once again nice bottle! I know theres a couple people from canada on here...Try posting the pic in the soda forum....

Yes, I would say about 1920 or so is a good date. Good looking Ontario bottle. I also collecto ontario soda and beer bottles, but see very, very little amount of stuff from Ottawa way, mostly focus on SW ontario, and do get into Toronto stuff, which is a never ending story.

If you have any questions, drop me a line I will try and answer them, or I can find someone who can!

Thanks
Kyle Waters

Tony,

Thanks again, I was not aware that the slightest tinge of blue or green makes it an aqua.
Well if that is the case then this bottle most likely falls into the aqua category since at the bottom green is defintely noticable.  A post on the soda forum is a good idea.

Kyle,

Thanks for your offer, I will contact you of forum.  Hopefully one of your fellow Ontario collectors can fill in some blanks.

Paul
