Hi everyone

I'm new to the forum and I found this bottle in a pile of dirt near my back yard. I live in PA and the bottle states Lancaster Bottling Company but I can't determine what it was used for, where its from or how old it is. Any information will be helpful. I also found some old (looks like clear medicine bottles with a small narrow shape and it seems had cork tops) I will post them later.

THanks

Hey Nero...sounds like you might be on to the start of a nice little back yard dump!!!  I think that was a Coca-cola bottling company in Lancaster, PA...
So maybe it's an old coke bottle....look on the bottom of the bottle and see if it says anything if you can get a good pic post it!! With soda's they usually have the year they were made somewhere on the bottom.

I'm a newbie to so don't take my word for it...theres plenty of people on here that will know for sure or point you in the right direction!!
And Welcome to the forum...can't wait to see what else ya find!!

looks like a good soda to me.

love the star embossing. nice local bottler.

I agree with Amanda - definately dig, if you;ve found a few already, might be  a dump right there. or the fill pile came from a dump , I have a lead on an old dump that a house was built smack in the middle, the guy who put the foundation in says they went many feet down and still nothing but ash and glass, he says they did find a couple unbroken so we'll see .

Thanks for the replies. I did check the bottom of the bottle and there is no identification marks - nothing. It heavy though and has several air bubbles in the glass. I would think Coke bottles would have their TM mark or other mark on the bottle so I'm not sure its a coke soda bottle, maybe a local soda mfg.

Any estimates on year?

nero ~ Welcome to the forum.

Your bottle is a "Star Bottling Works" soda bottle, and likely dates in the early 1900s. If you haven't done so already, also check around the "heel," which is the very bottom edge around the base. Look for symbols and other marks. Plus a good examination of the seam up the side of the bottle would help. See if it goes all the way to the top, or stops near the shoulder, or wavers and is not straight. Typically with a blown in the mold (BIM) bottle the seam will disappear near the top, which would date it prior to "around" 1906.  The automatic bottle machine wasn't invented until 1906, and bottles after that would have the seam going all the way through the lip. There are a few exceptions to all of this, so please use this as a general rule. It's definitely after 1892, as the "Crown" top (for using caps) wasn't invented until then. As for the brand, others may have more specific info on that, as I personally am not familar with the "Star Bottling Works."  Remember, there were literally "thousands" of various brands over the years, and I doubt anyone is familar with each and every one of them.

I hope this helps, and good luck.

P.S. ~  Just to cover my tail -- there is a possibility, although slim in my opinion, that it's a beer bottle. But I seriously doubt it. Most beer bottles used the word "brewing" on the label.

P.S. ~

Duh!  I just noticed it has the "contents" info on the bottom. This wasn't required on bottles until around 1914 ... so it's likely from around 1914 into the mid 1920s.  But check the seam anyway, and see if it goes all the way to the top. Again, exceptions sometimes apply.

SODAPOPBOB,

Wow, you are correct! A true bottle coinsurer, Thank You.

I didn't even realize the seam until you mentioned it and it does stop right before the top, maybe a 1/2" below the first raised lip (moving from bottom to top).

I thought it had to be old because of the air bubbles throughout the glass and thickness of the glass. I recently found another clear bottle that seems to have had a cork top enclosure, small narrow rectangle shape, clear, and states Kemps' Balsam For That Cough, embossed on the side. It has a very thin seam, which is only visible at the neck and travels right to the top. There is nothing around the bottom - no marks and no Identification of content amount etc?

Any idea on this one? 20's maybe

nero ~

Glad I could be of help. But since "Medicinal" bottles really aren't my thing, I suggest the A-B.net "Search" feature located at the top of each page. Just enter Kemp's Balsam in the appropriate box, and it will find everything ever discussed about it, (if anything). I haven't tried it yet, but the search feature may also pull up something on your "Star Bottling Works" bottle. Try it and see what you can find. It may pull up several listings, so you will have to click on each one individually and look for the "yellow" highlighted references. Good luck and let us know what you find. And the next time you have a soda bottle question, I suggest you post it on the Soda Bottle category where it will get more exposure and replies. Personally, I seldom look this particular category unless there is nothing going on with the soda bottle stuff where I spend most of my time.
