New to the forums. Lots of unknown bottles - 3/20/2007 6:43:39 PM    thebottlelady   Posts: 27 Joined: 3/20/2007 From: Madison Heights, VA Status: offline Here is a picture of one of many bottles that I dug up at the site of an a fallen old mansion. The mansion might have been used as a tavern during prohibition if the local I spoke to was correct. This emerald green liquor bottle has a diamond and an overlapped oval with an I or a 1 in the middle. The seam goes all the way to the top of the bottle. It also has a large indention in the bottle that goes up maybe 2 inches inside the bottle. I would just like to know a year, possibly what it's contents were, and a price estimate. I have about 100 more bottles. I spent the day cleaning off a lot of them and just had a few that looked unique. Attachment (1) Post #: 1

It says Frankfort Distilleries on the front as you can see in the pitcure. I'm not sure what it is but in the bottom-right image it has a tiny raised 'thing' that looks like it was added onto the bottle, maybe to patch a hole or something. On the whiskey bottle, are you talking about the circular chip or the 'thing'? It's shape reminds me of a bracket put on the back of jewelry so that you can put it on a necklace or a tiny, flat handle. The 'thing' is actually raised on the bottle. I can't imagine what it's purpose is near the bottom. I've put all my bottles up for the night so I won't bother anyone with more pictures. I found a Clorox bottle in great condition for being buried 5 feet below the ground since the late 40's. It even has the rubber cork still stuck in it! (in reply to thebottlelady) Post #: 8

This first bottle looks to be another liquor bottle. The seam goes all the way up to the lid and the lid is quite rusty so I won't chance removing it to see if the seam goes any further. The cap has some red and white on it, but I can't make out anything else. The paint is chipping off so I'm hesitant to clean it. It says 4/5 QUART 4 times around the bottom of the bottle. On the bottom it has a star with the letter 'C' in it and the number 5 an inch or so below it. Attachment (1) (in reply to bottlenutboy) Post #: 10

Seam goes all the way to the top. The bottom says Penick & Ford LTD. Seam goes all the way to the top of the bottle. It's in a kind of wide octagon shape. on the bottom is the number '6' a 'P' in a circle and then the numbers '377'. Probably another liquor bottle. Says "Full Pint" and then gives the Federal Law warning on one side. The other side has a shield with a large letters 'C' and 'D' overlapping and 'Co.' in the middle of the C and D. On the bottom it has 'D-8', '68', 'F' in a hexagon, and a '5'. Probably a Vermnt Maid or some other similated maple syrup. The next one is either a pickle, chutney or Olive bottle. The last is a whiskey flask. Clean them up and they will be keepers. The little glass stopper doesn't go with the tiny bottle. I wish I could find what it goes to. Hasn't fit anything yet. But the tiny bottle is maybe 1 inch tall and about 1 1/2 inches on each side. Since the mansion was built of stone and brick, a lot of the bottles have scratches on them. I'm hoping to go back and dig up a few hundred more this weekend, tomorrow if I'm lucky. Found 36 cents in my driveway with the metal detector. Seems to be the only place where I can find something worth the effort. The ground around my house is full of iron and nails. I've got to totally clean out the back seat of my car and cover it with a sheet. I didn't realize I would find so many bottles or that they would be super-dirty. At least the ground is nice and wormy. Better than digging in Alaska!! (in reply to thebottlelady) Post #: 17

I might take my camera with me but I'm kinda afraid it might get lost. I wish I would have taken pics of the stone walls before I tore them apart. I nearly uprooted a tree trying to get a large bottle that was oddly under the roots of the tree above ground. It was like the tree grew over the bottle and encased it in roots. Sadly, it was broken and so are some large roots. As we left, my mother-in-law (who just couldn't stop herself from digging) moved to a different spot and found a franc and a 1943 nickel. She's determined to find all the dishes she can and piece them back together. I think she's a little obsessive, but then I do enjoy digging holes a little too much.
