Hello all, my first post-
I was digging up a fence anchor in the back yard when I hit some glass. Hoping I'd run across some kid's buried piggy bank, I investigated and pulled out 2 broken bottles (though some may consider these jars). I eventually found 17 intact small ones and two larger ones (see photo) that all match. Also enough broken pieces for about 8 more. No labels and a few had rusty illegible lids. Small ones are about 3.5 in tall. I havent cleaned them up yet, but I did note the I-O mark on the bottom of some with a 2 digit year (some are unmarked) and the big ones only say Duraglas.

Thanks to posts already in this forum, I've learned that they are Owens-Illinois from the 1940's. I'm trying to figure out what was in them. None had any contents (besides groundwater) or smell. It must have been some product that a farm family would have used a lot in the 40's. I doubt if it's caviar. Probably someone's collection of incurable diseases- lol! They were buried about a foot down. There may be more in the hole but I got tired of digging. I never imagined anything was there at all! Also there was one round bottle marked Amphvl. Any clues or thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Well I had to go back to the hole. For one thing, I hadn't gotten the fence anchor out yet! I found one more intact bottle/jar and some pieces of the other broken bottles. I also found one of the metal lids which crumbled once I got it out, and a small porcelain item that may be an earplug or a stopper or a nipple of some sort. I dug around more until I was satisfied that everything was out, then refilled it.

The one non-Duraglas bottle was marked Amphyl, and I found out that it is a kind of disinfectant made by the same company as Lysol. I didnt find a company history that would tell me when it was introduced.

The I-O marked jars were all from 1946. The non-marked ones only had a single digit. I'm sure they are all from about the same time. Somebody sure was fond of that mustard (or whatever was in them)!! Thanks for the comment, madman.
