Here in my hometown we had numerous 400 room hotels on the shores of the lakes that flourished with East coast travelers back in the 1870s and 80s.These shorelines are where a few good friends and myself spend many summer weekend days diving. Here is just a swatch of non bottle finds that came out of this area last summer.I thought someone may be able to tell me what the devil the devil item is!It is white metal or pewter with one wing (the other is gone) and probably the best resemblence of satan himself! The detail on his face is amazing!See both pictures.I often wondered if an ink well sat in the center.Next is a 32 caliber revolver!Thirdly is an old ships lantern made of brass, fourth is an early photograph of a boy and girl acid etched on a zinc plate in the original frame and lastly an old tile from a nearby church. We find alot of garbage but sometimes things like these just have to brought home for show and tell.
Thanks!
Tom

Hi Thomas, those are wonderful finds! I wish I was certified in diving, there's some old lakes in NY where i grew up that had some of those Victorian resorts. Have you ever heard of Lake Minnawaska in the Shawangunk Mtns. in NY outside of New Paltz? There was a 400+ room hotel up on the cliffs that burned in the late 60's. The dump for the place was pretty much cleaned out back then, but I'm sure there's things in the lake. That lake is nearly 700' in the middle!

Really awesome finds! I've heard of Lake Minnewaska - grew up in Upstate NY, have been to a few of the lakes No. of Albany as a teen. How were the lake bottoms? I recall a lot of weeds and silt way back.

Thanks for the kind words! We actually are here in southeastern Wisconsin! We find lots of patent medicines, saratoga mineral waters, hair, teeth, and perfume bottles of all sizes shapes and colors. We had a large train depot in town that would bring the vacationers in and then they were whisked off to the lakefront resorts. We had a miniature version of Saratoga out here with numerous natural springs.People were encouraged to "take the waters" along with alot of ales, bitters, and whiskeys from the looks of what we have been finding! My best find to date is a civil war soda from Milwaukee with a very unique closure called a spiral spring or coil stopper. We all end up finding bottles one way or another!Take care!
