My 5 year old son called me outside to get some spiders out of his sandbox that he was playing in. He thought that there might have been a daddy longlegs or something in there that he didn't exactly want to play with. At 1st I didn't see any spiders until I turned over one of the toys he was playing with earlier. This is what I saw only much more alive. For those of you who haven't seen one before it is a Black Widow Spider, capable of an extremely painful bite that can be quite debilitating especially for a young child. I am so thankful that he pointed it out to me, that I responded quickly and that he didn't get bitten. I plan to sift all of the sand in his sandbox and check out all of the nearby areas for spiders. Thanks for small miracles. Please listen to your children. They don't always cry wolf.

They are listed as number two on the most toxic venmon list.We have them in here in New Jersey.I have seen them a few times in my lifetime.
Nasty spider glad you caught him.Add a generous amount of salt to your sand box the sodium wont harm your son but will do a nice job of ridding of all the unwanted creatures in the sand box fleas, spiders chiggers ect.Thats why bringing home the seashore sand for a sandbox is the best way to go.

Wow,never knew that bit of info. Steve! Thanks for sharing that!

My sister lived in Fla. once and almost walked right into a BW web strung between two trees in her yard. She just happened to look up in time. There was a Widow right in it too.The trap door spider is very bad too.I think that is the worst one up this way.The Giant Wood Spiders we have (they get up to 4") are very quick and will jump. They give a nasty bite but aren`t poisonous.

Anybody`s hair tinglin` yet?

Thanks for the salt suggestion Steve. Something that I didn't know but will act upon immediately. This whole experience has open my eyes and yes Mad, I believe that my son does have an angel watching over him. We all need to be careful pursuing our hobby as we often times are in the woods where we can all of a sudden run into the un-expected.

There was a really bad storm coming through and we got a call on the cell phone to get off the river.  After about 10 minutes, Sara and I get back in our kayaks and start going down river when Sara says, "Ben, there is a spider the size of a softball on your kayak"  I about jumped out of the boat.

yeah, those water spiders are fairly common here. They blend in real well on wood debris tho so they are hard to see.

I'm all for safety, but I never kill a spider. If I find one at work or in the house I always carry it outside in a cup or glass. The one's that get to me are the spiders that can walk right up glass or plastic. I know where the black widows live here around the yard. They generally like dark out-of-the-way places next to fences, the old wooden fuse box, a place next to the garage door where there's a crack in the siding/door frame. No young children or unexpected visitors here.

I'm with you, Lordbud. We have a lot of black widows out here in northern Nevada, and I don't bother them, and they don't bother me. I will, however, snag their egg case off the web and dispose of it in the garbage can.   ~Mike

Not sure what type bit me today,...Fred and I did a lot of brush bashing,....I felt one web engulf my face,...usually I put my digging rake out ahead of me but forgot once or twice....That was about 3:30 this afternoon,...I felt a sharp pain but it passed, didn't notice till later when getting ready to go over to Penn Digger's for supper, Laur looked and noticed a bite there....right now it's pretty tight and stiff with some weird pains but if no better tommorow, E.R. I guess,. Hopefully it was nothing awful.

The horse flies are worse this year than ever up here, but that was probably a spider that bit you Joe, especially where you just went through a web. They always raise a good bump on me and last for a couple days. They make a bigger welt than even the huge Moose flies. Try not to dig at it.             -Tim

Unfortunately, Black Widows are fairly common here.  You can always tell a black widow web because it is stronger than most spider webs.  I saw a mouse get caught in a BW web one time and could not get free.  The BW killed him...Ron

Too Funny, Poison_us,... Steinbeck,....right? Tim,...we have horseflys with their own drill bits, and deerflys too, I can remember back in the day, swimming down at the river and having one land on your scalp when you couldn't always get a hand free to swat at it! OUCH!  This was weird because you could "feel" the poison, so it had to be spider.... Anyhow, today the stiffness is passing and I'm feeling more normal....I ALWAYS remind myself to put the rake out ahead and sooner or later I always forget.....Maybe this will help reinforce my memory...

As for painful things to get stung by in the woods, I think catepillars top my list.
If you have touched a saddleback catepillar you know what I mean.

beware!!
