Until  I saw this - the glass doesn't even match the rest of the bottle...

I bought it anyway - it looks pretty good in front of my dad's outdoor fireplace.

Anybody know where these are made?  China, maybe?  The glass is full of tiny bubbles and looks great in the light.

It's nice Annie, looks Mediterranean, Spain, Portugal, Italy. ahhh my people.  The pontil sometimes doesn't match the bottle. The design on the bottom is I think the end of the punty. The rope looks nylon from the pics. If that's the case you can date it fairly close from that. It's a beautiful piece in a beautiful setting regardless of the age. When I go out hunting and spot something I don'r reconize, I just step back and look. I mean really look, every deatail. Then I go through all the knowledge I've stored in this leaky seive of mine. Most time I can place it, sometimes not. But I like what I like, so if the dealers willing to work with me and I can afford it I'll take it home. 90% of the flea markets and antique stores I go to I'll leave empty handed. It's the other 10% of the time when the heart starts racing. Either way I enjoy myself, have made dozens of friends that roll their eyes when I come strolling in, and get to blab with wonderful people like yourself in this here forum. Not a bad way to spend our free time.
Rick.

I don't understand why this bottle even has a pontil on it - it looks like it was blown in a mold, and it is extremely heavy.  I actually thought that it was a fake pontil mark that was put on so that the bottle appeared to be older than it is.

Most pontiled bottles where blow in mold. To apply a pontil to a previously blown bottle I'm pretty sure you'd have to reheat the bottle itself or it would shatter. I'd guess the bottle would have to be brought up to suitable tempature slowly. That's seems like an awful lot of trouble and expense to make a piece of art glass. looking at the first pic It's a three piece mold, no?
