This bottle is in a antique shop near me and thought I would share it with other's in case someone is interested in purchasing it. It has an original lightning-type stopper in it that I have never seen on this period (1920s) of crown-top bottle. Both the bottle and stopper are in great shape. They are asking $25.00 (too much for my interest) but I may be able to get it for $20.00 ... but doubt they will take less. Plus if someone wants it I would have to add about $10.00 for postage, making the total about $30.00.  I have no intention of profiting from this, and would just like to see it have a new home. I already spoke with one member about it via a PM, but he was only interested in it at about $10.00 plus shipping. So if you just have to have it, let me know through a PM and we can discuss the details.  But again, I doubt I can get it for less than $20.00. It has a double embossed label with the "Crushy" guy on one side under the letters ... O C ... I believe it is an 8 oz, but with no state/city that I recall.

Please let me know ... it may not last!

Thanks,

SODAPOPBOB

P.S. ~

I am also interested if putting this type of stopper on a Crown-top is common or rare?  I've never seen it done before!

Thanks,

SPB

28 oz Orange Crush Pat 1920 with Lightning Stopper. The 28 slug plate Orange Crush on the right has a dried up cork inside. I picked these up at a bottle in PA two weeks ago and sold a couple at last weekends show in AL.

A lot of bottlers in the North used 'family size' bottles and I've seen a lot with Lightning and other closures.

That doesn't explain a stopper on an 8 oz. Maybe it was reused for another liquid? The stoppers were sold for home use putting up root beer and catsup.

celerycola ~

Thanks for the info and photo(s).

The Orange Crush bottle in that antique shop keeps haunting me, so I have decided to run over there today and purchase it. (Providing it's still available ???)  I intentionally put it in the back row among some other bottles ... but I doubt this will hide it from a serious collector who, like many of us, can spot an old soda pop bottle a mile away no matter how well disguised it might be. I'll have to take another look at it again for details on the closure, but as I recall it is exactly like the one shown below. Plus I am providing a link to various other bottle closures, which hopefully will help those who have never visited the site before to identify/date various bottles. If necessary, just scroll down the page a little ways, but skip the index part for now, and you will see the title ... "Lightning-Type Closures."  Plus, be sure to click on the highlighted link ... "Charles de Quillfeldt's Bottle Stopper Patent"  for additional information on this particular closure.

If/when I have the bottle in my posession, I will post aditional photos of it.  I'm hoping I can get it for about $15.00 ... wish me luck!

I believe this is the identical closure on the bottle, but will have to take a closer look at it to be sure.

Well, I went back to the antique shop ... but the so called "dealer" wasn't too interested in "dealing." The best she would do was to reduce the price from $25.00 to $22.50. Wow! I think she's holding out for a classic car show scheduled for later in the summer. Them guys will buy anything!  Lol    Besides, I discovered it had a couple of small chips I didn't see before. Although, I did determine that the closure is probably one of the types that celerycola mentioned. And except for the wire ring around the neck, the top part is made entirely of rubber. Old and cracked, but all rubber.  There were no identifying marks on it, which means it is probably one of numerous variants.  Anyhoo ... I let the bottle go, and this concludes what I am calling ... "My Dumbest Thread of All Time."   Lol     However, I did just discover that the word "Dumbest" is a combination of "Dumb" and "Best" ... go figure!

Later,

SPB
