I know I'm digging up an old post but maybe it's back in interest. Here's a picture of mine and some text from an 1895 add I read "Mothers, When you become weary with the household work and care, stop a moment, sit down and inhale Portsmouth Lavender Salts. (Can't leak See the Cap) You'll get up feeling rested and fresh as in the morning. Its invigorating power is wonderful. Try it. 25 cents. Preston of New Hampshire." I finally got mine open (another post) so I'll let my wife try it. I took a sniff after I opened it but it still smells like ammonia to me, where's the lavender? The embossing is on the other side.
