As is almost always the case with really old pits the nice things you get are usually are not bottles. This was a very strange pit, it was a 20 x 3 rectangular brickliner about 5 ft deep and divided in half with a foot an a half trash layer, great you might say but no it really never got great. It had a really nice loam layer but not very trashy. What I am learning quickly about early pits is summed up with this "**** load of pottery an a bunch of broken mallets". Now having said that there was some cool things in it, I will let the pictures speak for themselves.....Greg

Sweet dig, your right about that being a nice large cent, all the ones I find are normally ate up when found in a privy opposed to metal detected.Lime is some evil stuff.

We also dug this thing I don't know what it is. It is made of carved bone and has inside threads on the ends.

It was an interesting dig. Sadly 1820s- 30s pits usually don't have any really great stuff in them. Most of the bottles aren't very good from that era. And many of the ceramics are quite plain. This pit did have a few 18th century holdovers that were nice. I will post pics of some of the reconstructed ceramics of the 1790-1820 pit we dug earlier this week once I get the stuff cleaned up and glued. And you can see the difference in the quality of the earlier pieces. The later 1840 to 60s pits usually have the better embossed bottles.

Chris

That American flag bowl/cup and the 1822 large cent are both extraordinary.  The coin would probably be XF or better if not dug, and as is it would probably be VF or better. That is a killer score despite the relatively high mintages, as are the pottery and stoneware pieces. I imagine that you didn't take home all those finds, so what were you you rewarded with for your efforts, Clam? Despite the damage I would say that the flag bowl would be one of the best items. Not only attractive, but the American market is seething for quality stuff like that, and if you aren't old and can afford to wait 30 years, it would be worth a f'ing lot more. It would be my first pick out of all that stuff, and would be worth a small fortune despite the damage and on top of its historical appeal. Nice digs. Wish Peoria had material like that.
