I was able to add this very rare beautiful blob top Baltimore steamer soda bottle to the collection recently. It is embossed O.D. Bates / Balto. This bottle is not listed in the Baltimore Bottle Book and neither is the name O.D. Bates. They list different style bottles(round bottom and gravitating stopper) from an O.B. Bates. Maybe this is an error bottle, or perhaps O.D. Bates was a relative of O.B. Bates. The bottle is in great condition and a very nice addition to my Baltimore blob top soda collection.

There is a primitve pottery bottle marked "D. D. BATES" could it be from Baltimore.

Possibly. I have never seen one before though. Maybe it should say O.D. Bates and it is an error which could make my bottle not an error and a different guy than O.B. Bates. Ill have to check with the Baltimore guys on it.

Found the following Baltimore Directory listings which nicely date your bottle 1881-1883:

1880 Bates, Oscar D. clerk, 14 Etting
1881 Bates, Oscar D. tonic Beer, 80 Centre market sp, dw 14 Etting
1882 Bates, Oscar D. tonic Beer, 80 Centre market sp, dw 14 Etting
1883 Bates, Oscar D. tonic Beer, 80 Centre market sp, dw 14 Etting
1884 No entry

Thanks for doing some research on the bottle Tod. I really appreciate it. Apparently Bates wasn't in business very long so no wonder its a rare bottle.

Good info Tod, I was wondering if you saw anything in your research that indicated if Oscar D. Bates was a son of Oscar B. Bates, of round bottomed "1876 Centennial Tonic Beer" fame?
Or, if perhaps he is the same person, but the "B" in the earlier O. B. Bates embossings was in error?
thanks, Chris

Chris,

Earlier directory listing have O. B. as a clerk for Dr. Bates. Have to assume he was related in some way. I did not dig into the Census records, which may indicate a relationship.

The elder Bates started life as a confectioner and somewhere along the line aquired the "DR" title.

I suspect the DD Bates is an error, but was it for Dr Bates or OB or a typo in the reference that I used.

Has anyone seen a mead bottle marked this way?

Hey Tod,
Thanks for the info.
I haven't seen any Bates stoneware bottles, to offer any info on them. I have seen a few stoneware handled jugs from the Baltimore Bates, but was not collecting them, so do not remember if they were impressed with "Dr.", "O.B.", "D.D.", or "O.D." ??
The Bates(s) certainly used some creative containers for the products they marketed, so it would not surprise me too much to find that they also had a stoneware bottle, even though it would not have been the norm for the type products they are known to have sold.

cool. The eagle faces to the left. The bottle has a lip chip and is stained but for 3 bucks it was a good buy i think.

The ones with the eagle facing left like the ones you and I have are common, I'd say in the condition your describing yours in, like $5 or so. I paid $20 for my mint example.
