While probing around a few months back I found this on a pile of crawl space dirt someone had left while going through some razed houses. I really could'nt tell what it was at the time so I put it in my pocket and forgot about it until I found it in the bottom of the washing machine a fews weeks later. So at that point I looked at it and saw it was a flying eagle penny, then it took me a few hours to figure out the date which is 1856 and that meant nothing to me at the time until I opened my U.S coin book and saw that this is arguably the rarest U.S one cent piece out there. The reason I know that it was not wishful thinking coming up with the date is that I did not know anything about the 1856 Flying Eagle before figuring out the date. My book is from 1996 and they listed this coin at $3600 in the worst grade that they list ! And one auctioned recently for $30,000. I think the condition of mine is the worst you can get and still be worth something. Are there any coin peeps out there who could give me some advice on what to do with this thing. I would appreciate it.......Greg

1912 - $23,000
1914-D - $22,000
1914-S - $49,000
1919-D - $42,000
1922 "plain" error - $123,000
1924 - $25,000

What are the odds of finding this coin lying on a pile of dirt in good old Baltimore, Crazy ! And there was only 1500 of them minted !

How'd you find out the date on it? It looks a little to beat up for the date to be visible. either way, nice find!

Looking at my official Numismatic grading standards guide I would have to say that this one ranks in the area of AG-3 or with the pitting maybe a bit lower. Good find, but condition wise it just doesn't look like much, which means a lot in this field.

that is a great find . i would settle for a 1857 or58 . after telling my dad about this post he says hey we got some of them . dont know if 56 57 or 58 yrs , gotta dig them out of the safe and check . ever since i was knee high he has collected guns knives and coins and marbles . the only thing he ever said repeatedly was condition , condition , condition . sam
