Those are neat with the labels. When I was younf and 1st started bottle digging with my Father in the early 70's or so we once found a old house back in the woods. In behind it was a family cemetery that was all grown up. We notced a grave that had what looked like snuff bottles sticking out of the ground around it. Of course (wrong I know) we had to investigate being bottle diggers. And guess what it was not snuffs but Paine Celery compound bottles that were stuck upside down all around the grave the entire 6 ft or so of the grave !!!!!!!!! Strange thing I still don't know why deco I guess maybe he was a Paines drinker my Dad and all the old collectors called them a 'POOR MANS BITTERS" don't know why they seem to cost as much as a Bitters. Nice Labeled ones are tough to find without the labels commoner .

Never saw one with a lable before! I used to collect only medicines, seems I should have seen one along the way. I found a cobalt ash trey with embossing advertising THE MIGHTY BROMO SELZER. IT was buried with half showing and yes it was wrong of me to take it as it was a grave adornment! I still feel bad about it as I am sure some loved one placed it there. I told myself at the time that the person didn't need it and any loved one who placed it there was probably dead too, as the piece looked to date in the early 1900s at least. MAN,it was perdy![STILL ,YES IT WAS WRONG] IN the 1970s I heard a story about some bottle collectors that found colored GA. blob tops at a grave site. YES they took them according to the story,of course this could have only been folklore. SORRY GOT OFF BASE A BIT HERE.

The Paine's is a neat bottle.  I always wonder why they used things like celery.  What's the story behind that med?  As far as the grave thing, it's totally plausible that they were having a drink or upset stomach (bromo) when visiting or burying their loved one.  I doubt the bottle meant anything to the person that left it there.  They had bigger things on their mind.  Your intentions are what matter.  I know you feel a little bad about it, guys, but it's not like you dug up their graves or anything.  Next time, just leave it and there will be no worries.  It's an interesting subject to discuss and I admire your honesty.  No big deal, we learn and move on.  Cemeteries are interesting to explore and photograph.  Anyway, cool bottle Cookie.

john,

Labels make the commoners more impressive, eh?

I have seen those labels and they look authentic. It is so hard to tell these days from a picture, as profiteers are mass producing labels for placement on the most common medicine and druggist bottles.

It is hard to reproduce wear and tear and aging, authentically.

Here are a couple more Vermont bottles I have picked up along the way.  The first is of a Henry's Electric Ointment (jar) with tin lid, still intact.

And another one from the Lindsey collection. This one without the A.J. Green embossment. This variant was for distribution to sattlelite stores.

I also got the accompanying dose cup and three victorian trading cards, all different.
