U_J ~

Gracias' amigo.

I have it on my watch list. I hope no one here bids on it. But all is fair in love and war!

Here's the list of confirmed ROOT 1915/1917s I got from Bill Porter back in December of 2011.

                          Bill Porter's List ~ All Marked With ~ ROOT 17 ~ For 1917

                                                1.  Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
                                                2.  Petersburg, Virginia
                                                3.  Spartanburg, South Carolina
                                                4.  Urbana, Illinois

There are no doubt other 1915/1917s ~ But these are confirmed.

Thanks again.

No prob Bob.. .   I hope you win the auction..

Might as well spill the beans..  I scored a ROOT 18 but................ theres a chance the 8 might be a 6 ... Seller said it was hard to read. Once I see it in person I will figure it out. Also its from the same city as the 17 your going to win.

Do you happen to have a list of ROOT 16 bottles ??. .

It appears the first contour bottles 15-18 had pretty crude looking bottoms and the city font was different from the later ones.

According to Bill Porter there are no 16 (1916) hobbleskirts. The "first" ones weren't issued until 1917. So it will be interesting to see what it is you bought.

Like I said earlier ... "That Dude Is Mine"  ...  But please don't tell anyone I paid $125.19 for it. I must be nuts! Oh, well. It's only money. But at least I have one now which (apparently) wasn't a confirmed bottle before. I will report back with some pictures of it just as soon as it arrives in about a week or so.

I will be sending you a bill for the balance because $50.00 was the max I really wanted to pay for it. So its all your fault. (Lol) Just kidding.

Gracias' Amigo ... I'm in the 1917 club now!

(Regarding keeping my eyes peeled for another Root 17) "Will do!" However, I have to confess the main reason I paid so much for the one in question is because I was getting tired of having to open so many different eBay listings just to read through the descriptions and try to determine which company made which 1915/1917. As you likely know, most eBay "titles" leave a lot to be desired and usually don't give a lot of specific information. Thus, it takes forever to open and read each one.

I contacted Bill Porter about my bottle because I wasn't sure what the 1GT stood for. He said the number 1 appears on most of the 1915 bottles Root produced (and not just the 1917s but later ones as well) and is a "type" code. He said the GT is for the mold itself. But he didn't say exactly what the letters stood for, (if anything specific). My guess would be that the G stands "Glass." (But this is just a guess).

Bill also informed me that no one he knows of (not even himself) has ever done any detailed research to try and determine exactly how many different city/state Root 1917s there are. He said it would be a good project for someone like myself. However, I didn't have the heart to tell him that if he doesn't know, that I'm not sure myself where to even begin such a project. But that doesn't mean it would be an impossible task, and may very well be something for someone to do eventually. I'm just not sure that I'm the man for the job.

Anyhoo ... I'm happy about finding one, and will let you know if I ever stumble onto another one.

Thanks again for the tip. Which means I won't be billing you for the balance. All things considered, I think I did okay.

Take care.

P.S. ~

As for contacting eBay sellers and asking them "Does your 1915 Coca Cola bottle have Root 17 on the base?" I got burned out on that after about the fifth time. Especially when some guy messaged me back and asked "Do you mean those little marks on the bottom?" Arrrggh! I was ready to pull my hair out after that one.

This is for anyone who wishes to address it and help me understand how eBay bidding works. And because I don't buy much stuff on eBay these days, I don't mind telling you that my so called tactics are to wait until the last 30 seconds before entering my maximum bid, and then just let the chips fall where they will. And even though I did this same thing yesterday,(increasing my initial bid only once) and there was only one other bidder involved at the end, it appears that during the last 30 seconds the other bidder had enough time to enter at least five "individual" bids. But how is it possible to increase a bid five times in 30 seconds? Or am I totally confused as to how that works? (It sure looked like he entered individual bids and not automatics).  ???

Here's the link again for those who want to take a look at the bidding history. And for those who want to look but may not know how,  just click on the little blue number where it shows the total bids, and then proceed from there.

P.S. ~

The total number of bids I'm referring to are the 14 in the center and not 5. Are those individual bids or automatics? And if automatic, why didn't it just jump up/increase in one single bid to beat mine? Its the times on the right that make me think the bids are individual.

I do all my ebay buying using Google Chrome browser. As soon as I enter a bid I get a link to increase my bid to a higher amount if I want to do so. If I am still not high bidder I can keep bidding manually.

I typically enter a bid in the last three seconds of an auction. That is close enough that I can bypass a proxy bid at a higher amount and win the auction.

Thanks. But I'm still a little confused. Does that "increase link" you mentioned function fast enough to allow someone to increase a bid 14 times in 30 seconds?

In other words ...

It sounds to me like you're saying the increase link is a constant ... click-click-click-click-click with your mouse until it finds the highest amount at that particular point and then beats it. Is this correct?

Depends on how fast you can type in a new bid amount.

Thanks. I will look into a little more and possibly experiment with it the "next time" I bid for something on eBay.

I always place my bidthe last 7-8 seconds and by the time I click the "confirm bid" there is usually 1-2 seconds left .

decide what the max is I want to spend and put that in.

For example If there is a ss coke I really really wanted / there is 1 min & many bids and item at $130.. I know someone is going to snipe in the last second. I would just bid $1000 @ the 8 sec mark and would win the bottle for the price the bidder before me bid. If Its was $250 then I pay that amount.
