I put a bid on this bottle on an impulse and surprisingly won, but have no idea what it is.  It was listed in American Bottle Auction as a food bottle, because it is eight inches tall and appears too large to be a perfume.  Now that I have it, I really doubt it was a food bottle.  I am pretty sure it is European, but I'm not even sure that it is very old - the pontil mark is very round and smooth.  I'd appreciate any help in identifying this one.

Very cool huh! From the bottom profile it has a classic pickle/food shape. with the bulbous neck and small opening i'd say some sort of spirts decantor. Very handsome bottle.

Thanks lobeycat - what do you make of that pontil?  It seems too perfect to me - could you hazard a guess as to the date this was made?

surprised they couldnt give you a clear answer, but I have noticed they seem a little lucid about eastern and early glass..thats not western.  It is a classic early cologne shape, like the early flint glass made in Boston and Phila, but I do not recall seeing any that size.  The pontil is a typical English or French style, so I would guess it is one of the later French copies of early American style colognes, 1870's - 1880's or so.  I do believe some of the french copies were used for food products too...not sure on that though.  that is just an educated guess, it could be much earlier but I doubt its a recent production either way.

nice bottle!

Thanks Tigue.  I  appreciate your comments -  I haven't seen a pontil like that before and didn't realize it is a typical English or French pontil mark.

yeah as tigga stated it's French for sure. Damn thing looks huge in realation to your hand. It's surely fancy enough to be a perfume but that's a whole lot of perfume! On a quailty Europian piece like that the pontil is usually re-fired to smooth it out a bit and this looks (at least to me) to be the case. Europian glass makers were a little slow catching up with technology and you'll see pontils on their work a bit later than on American (go Obama!) glass. I'll guess a date on this only for you Annie, risking the forum beat down I'll get when a real expert gets here and say 1880-1900.

I think Lobey is on the right track with age and orgin. It looks similar to some French figurals I have seen but have no idea what it was used for.

And hopefully this is a better picture of the pontil - it has a very smooth round center, with the exception of one small area in that circle that is deeper than the part that may have been polished.  There are three swirls outside of  the main circle that are also smooth to the touch.

Hi Cindy -
McKearin and Wilson has one pictured as #9, plate 107 on page 393. The one pictured isn't exactly like yours, but has some of the same features. It mentions that it could possibly be French.

I have several French (we'll call them) colognes with my other ones and like to match the Americans w/ the like variations. I almost bought one exactly like yours at York, just because it was a good deal and I didn't have it yet. I bought the lion cologne instead and I'm very happy w/ it. Nice find. I like yours and hope to get one someday soon.

I would classify yours as a Colorless Figured (or Fancy) Cologne.

Thanks Meech!  I really appreciate the information!   One difference with my bottle from the ones in McKearin is that mine is a full 8  inches tall.   This isn't a good picture, but you can see that it is actually taller than the pint mineral water bottle.

Defintely looks old. Probably European, possibly French.
It had an open pontil mark which was ground down and polished. You see this on bottles like perfumes, apothecary, and decanters... basically bottles intended to be handled a lot. It may have been part of a set. The neck bulbs are most common on colognes and druggist bottles.
Seems uncommon based on the size.
