Hello!  This is my first post here! A little bit of background: My dad used to collect vintage bottles and things and he gave me his little collection.  Unrelated, I work at a small business pharmacy as a sales clerk and I wanted to give my boss something cool this year for Christmas since he treats me so well there.  I found some pharmacy related bottles in my dad's collection and he said that he is ok with me giving them to my boss as a gift as long as I don't give away anything valuable!

Anyways, here are the bottles... I was wondering if all of you nice people could give me some more information about some of them.  The last one I bought at an antique shop for $5 today which is what sparked the idea to look through my dad's old bottles. Thanks!

The bottle says "NEOFERRUM"

"Dr. James Soothing Cordial"

"Dr. D. Jayne's Expectorant"

This is the one that I bought for $5.  Fun fact: the 3vi at the top means that the bottle is six ounces.

Thanks again!

Perhaps it will help to know that I live in Pittsburgh?

Everything looks to be under $10 apiece, and the last one is my favorite.

No high-value items in that lot, but i'd bet that Pe-ru-na with the nice label would fetch a little over 10. Your boss better give you a raise after being gifted with a nice display of antiques related to the business!

Cool bottles, labeled ones make for interesting reading. They're all pretty low priced, so they make great gifts.

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone!  Maybe some other time I can post the rest of my dad's old collection.  He has a good bit of bottles, and I have always found them really neat!

Hey Gunth,
That is really interesting. I don't want to hijack the thread but were all D Jayne's expectorants heroin (or is it just that bottle or city)?

I think that he was referring to this bottle:

Jaynes were from Philthadephia. The Dr James bottles are from Pittsburgh. The Heroin form of morphine wasnt developed until 1874. A big seller for the Bayer company. It was thought initially to not be habit forming (WOOPS!!). Its amazing how profit can always trump science isn it? Anyway it was a very effective cough suppressant for children (if you overlook the minor side effects)

I think some of the Jaynes meds contained morphine but they were developed long before Heroin was invented.

Thanks for clearing that up. Like I said, I didn't want to hijack the thread but I thought that the heroin info was really fascinating. Funny how those old fashioned meds seemed to fall into two categories. Some were totally useless full of inert or ineffective ingredients (for medicinal purposes) and others usesd powerful and / or dangerous drugs or alcohol to accomplish the (not always desired) results.
