You guys have never let me down yet! There is always somebody that knows something about every weird find I post up here. I fear that today may end this streak.

This little brass item came out of a lake. It stands about 2 & 1/8 inches tall (maybe 2 inches wide). It has male threads on the top. It is amphora or urn shaped. The top is just small enough that a quarter does not fall in.

As you can tell from the pictures, the brass finish is all mottled. It is possible that this was originally chrome plated and the water ate the finish . . .

Unfortunately, there are no markings on the piece. It is not stamped in any way. Here's the bottom. In this shot, you can see how there are three very accurately carved grooves in the metal that are slightly thinner than the rest of the container. Its possible that there were little straps that held this to something else???

It is also surprisingly heavy. It weighs about two ounces (and its little). Here is a pic looking down into the mouth. With those threads on top, it is possible that this is a piece of a larger object. However, the threads may have simply been designed for a lid??

Nifty grab, Bob!! It has a gorgeous patina, whether we can thank Neptune for that or not I have no clue.. a bit small for ashes, unless it was someone's beloved pet hamster..

These are some really good guesses. I have never seen a ferret using a spitoon until now. Who knew they needed one? Once you see that image, though, it becomes harder to argue against the plain old truth. Ferrets and spitoons belong together.

Thanks for your guesses. I suppose its not distinctive enough to know for sure.I'm going with snuff jar for now - that seems to be the most likely conclusion. The pet urn stuff was pretty funny. If anybody has a ferret that needs a spitoon, let me know.

Thanks California but what does the quote mean? The state has outlawed ferrets? They're like lions or something? What sad times are these when cute little spitoon spitting ferrets are forced to go spitoonless.
