I'm new to bottle collecting and haven't really dug anything, mostly finds near the surface from old dumps. I remembered, and went back to, an old well and possibly an old house foundation or something. This is pretty far in the woods in what is now a logging area.

^ It's a large rectangular hole in the ground lined with stone.. am I wrong in saying it's part of an old house? Bear with me haha

I dug around a little and you can tell there's a few big trees that want to make that difficult for me.. The rusted metal in the first picture is what I found out to be a Round Oak Chief stove. I found a few rusted cans and a plastic Red Top snuff container.. I also found tons of glass around the whole area but unfortunately it was melted beyond recognition. :/ Should I dig deeper here? I don't know why all of it would be melted.
And this is the well that was nearby:

I didn't even attempt to get down there considering it was above my height.. But does this spot look like there's potential?

Perhaps the house burned down....You're correct to avoid that well, they can be vr. dangerous....Perhaps there's some buried glass around there that didn't get melted....Looks like an ancient homesite. Anyone you could take to help dig?

I never thought of the house burning down, that might've happened. And I definately wasn't going to go down the well, next time I'll look around the area more.

For finding privies ask Sick Rick for some advice. For finding the old dump you need to look at the terrain and a detector could help out a lot. Follow any stone walls down over a bank. Dig around any corners in the stone walls. Look for nearby creeks with steep banks, any steep bank or rock pile may hide some old glass. Some old timers buried their trash under the stone wall as it was being made. Also dig deep down in the cellar hole itself. Dig until you hit bottom and then dig a small test hole around 2 feet deeper just to see if you hit anything else. A bottle probe could be easier then digging a deep test hole. The well may have some glass down there but nothing worth dyeing for. Stay safe and good luck. Swiz

Thanks, I'll try that. And there's a small river parallel to the road, so I'll check there too.

Walk the top ridge line for a distance. Any signs of rusty tin on the surface will most times indicate glass below. a detector here would be even better if you don't see any surface trash. The dump I'm at now has surface trash in one spot and the next spot has a 2+ foot thick cap before you even start hitting glass. some spots there is a 2 foot cap, a layer of ash, glass and other rusty crusties, another cap and then more goodies below. So digging to the bottom might mean your digging to the top of the next cap. I have an 18" probe that I use when I hit what I think is bottom. I dig a bit deeper in a couple spots and then probe the bottom of those test holes to see if it gets deeper still. In the fall walk back through the same area. After the vegetation is dead the dumps seem to start appearing out of nowhere's. Good Luck, Swiz
