Anyone up on pre-columbian pottery? When I first saw this in the antique shop, I thought it must be a modern reproduction... Now I'm thinking maybe not... Whatch'all think?

Ron

K Ronny here we go. this stuff can be tricky, sticky and down right dicky. There are a lot of reproductions of these things as you know. touristy type, roadside mexican made goodies made for folks just like me. Some of it's nice though, but basically nic-nac dust collecting paperweights. 70% of the real stuff is on the shelves illegaly and the other 30% commands high high prices, usually at auctions. The chances of you finding a legal, piece of pre- columbian art in pristine condition at a rt.20 antique antique store, with out the seller knowing what he/she has is slim, Slim. The state of preservation would be a remarkable thing indeed on your piece. Look at her shine you crazy diamond.  Of course what the hell do I know from ancient artifacts? I'd answer any of your queries whether I knew the answer or was just talking through my hat.

Rick.
(edit) I like it what ever it is! R.

Yep, Hard to tell from pics Ron. I have seen a few pieces that looked like they were made yesterday that were real and many that looked old that were fakes.

But I'd say that the markings on the fore head look Western American more than Mexican Indian or South American but the piece looks like it would be from south of the boarder.

I'd go with my first instinct and say that it's more than likely a good replica.

I'll be singing that song all day long.

Thanks for your thoughts, guys...

Here's a similar piece on ebay... It's a stirrup flask rather than a jar but the overall form and stylistic elements are similar...

The expert I sent the photos to FINALLY got back to me... Here's what he said:

Hi there,   Looks OK.  Probably Moche III or IV, worth maybe $1500ish full retail.  Would have to see it to be sure...   ---

Hell yeah RonSwede! You have a good eye boyo. I would have walked right by it if it had a $15 sticker on it. Mumbling under my breath "junk" Time to find the right outlet for that beautiful piece.

Lobes.
