I am just about to dig my first privy here in AZ and have a question. I know to
dig straight down and try to find the width and length with a probe "liner".

Is the bottle layer always at the bottom? When you are standing in the pit how
do you avoid breaking the bottles by stepping on them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Karl

there will be a use (organic)layer at the bottom, it will contain anything that was pitched in while the outhouse was in use. there could be bottles all the way up to the top. these bottles i call late fill. if the outhouse was moved to another location, there would have been a nice size hole left to fill. dont worry about crushing bottles i weigh 195 lbs, and cant remember crushing anything. what i would worry about is loose soil, if you are in a sandy area you will whant to be carefull of cave ins!! dig with a buddy for safety.
