I've found several probes on the web and wanted to ask everyone's experiences. Please suggest brands and where to purchase. Are "plunger bars" and "probe bars" used by plumbers to locate pipes the same thing?

Also, does using a probe make it very easy (foolproof, almost) to determine that you have hit soil that has been previously disturbed (well or privy)?

As always, thanks for you input.

It may be easy after you have done it for ten years and have a lot of experience but I dont find it that easy at all. Its certainly not foolproof, as a fool I can attest to that.

Making your own probe from trunk steel is the way to go.I have never owned a good commercially sold probe and I have tried a bunch.

As Matt said, probed is a learned skill and takes a while to get the hang of.I took longer than most to get good at it but I keep learning more everytime out. Some people I have dug with pick it up quick and I have dug with guys who have dug for years who couldn't hit the hole with a ten foot probe. There is only one way to learn.Good luck out there.
