Rookie questions:
after you hit an object with the probe, how can you tell if its glass? It was my understanding that the tip of the probe would "scratch" the bottle then you could look at the tip and see if any glass shards remained, is this accurate? If so what is the probe tip made from? I found a man that would sell me a probe for 38 dollars. does this sound good? Sorry if i'm asking redundant questions but I couldn't find any answers... and thanks in advance for the advice. EVC

The 'shards' that may come up with the probe hopefully won't be from what once was a nice unbroken bottle Generally, you'll spot ash and yes tiny glass fragments if you've probbed into a use layer. There's been a lot of good information given here on the forum about probes. Check the 'search' menu up top of the page for past discussions on 'probes' We just had one a few weeks ago. I think you can do better than that $-wise.

Welcome to the forum .
When you probe a bottle you can tell it's glass by the sound it makes, thats how we tell rock from glass and stoneware. The only way to learn this if you can't find an experienced digger to go with is to probe glass and rocks, bury a bottle (not a good one) and pack the dirt down tight then probe it, it will give you a bit of an idea what you want to hear when your digging.
If you probe something and think it may be a bottle be gentle with it, you don't want to pull out a $1000 bottle with a hole in it .

you might want to have a ball bearing type tip to start with. it is a little harder to push in the ground, but it will do less damage. when you feel comfortable with the probe then change to a bullet shape tip with a little more point to it. breakage will happen from time to time, i have been doing this a long time and i still manage to probe thru a bottle from time to time. just take your time and push slow to start.
