found a possible dump site with some common good for target practice bottles. So i figured i could dig under and possibly find some old bottles, so i dug and dug and didnt find anything. So when do you draw the line of there not being any bottles and just not digging far enough, i dug straight down in about a 2 foot square area for about 4 feet and didnt find anything

If there is no signs of rust, ash, shards, or bottles I would stop. Is there bottles scattered around on the surface? Could be just that. Probe around and dig a few more test holes.

You need to get yourself a probe and push it in the ground all over the area. If it goes into the ground and you feel a crunch of some kind, that is the place to dig. Digging test holes all over the place is a lot of work and can be very discouraging.
