Been diving for bottles the last three weeks in the Eastport area.

The finds have been awesome!  No photos yet as I only have computer access at the local library.

Best find so far is an old ceramic pitcher with the emblem of the "Portland Steamship Co." on it.  Dates from about 1880 or so I believe.  It has one chip on it but look really clean otherwise.

Found a number of inks including an aqua eight-sided umbrella.

Another nice find is a "W.W. Whipple & Co. - Portland, Maine" medicine that is really clean.  Only hit on Google for it indicates it is rare.

Once I can upload the photos I'll post them.

I have a few more days of diving to do before heading home.

Alan

Here is the first photo.  This is a pitcher from the Portland Steamship Company.  I've been looking for a decent item with any of the steamship company logos for quite some time.

I've hit a really nice spot on the dive site with a good number of circa 1880 to 1900 bottles and other stuff.

Here is one with a nice green color.  Diving in Eastport is dark with rather poor visibility.  I saw this bottle buried in the mud and also filled with mud.  I could not tell the color underwater and thought it was just a typical clear slick.  The top was a little rough looking so I grabbed it just to make sure.  Once I got out of the water I was pleasantly pleased with the nice color.  There is a raised rectangular area for a paper label.

Any ideas on what it might have contained?

Alas not the valuable pontiled version but here is a nice "W.W. Whipple & Co - Portland, ME" medicine bottle I found precariously located underneath a 4' x 4' x 4' concrete mooring block.  I use the mooring block as a navigation aid and will sometimes stash bottles beside it for pick up at the end of the dive.  On one dive the sand and mud underneath the block had washed partially away and sitting right under the block was the Whipple bottle.

Great looking stuff Alan. Must be a really good spot your diving. The pitcher is an excellent piece of history.

Hit 'er hard. I love bottle and artifact diving, but the conditions aren't clear around here. We have braille diving in the local river.

Funny, that embossment on the Whipple bottle looked like a weblink to me for a second. It looked like "WWW. WHIPPLE" something or other in the pic. That would have been quite anachronistic.

Found a number of inks this last trip.  Here are my two favorites.

I've been looking for an eight-sided ink for some time.  I found this one (left) on the first dive of the trip.  My wife keeps claiming it but she's not gettin' it!

Biggest bummer find of the trip was a turtle ink with the top gone.

Funny thing about the clear one is I had found it on previous dives but never taken it.  I thought the darn thing was just a salt shaker!

Since I have time here is another for today.

It's just a plain generic ginger beer but I love it nevertheless.
