I RECENTLY FOUND THESE TWO BOTTLES IN A LOCAL BOTTLE HOLE. I HAVE BEEN SKIMMING OFF THE TOP AT THIS PLACE FOR 30 YEARS, BUT HAVE RECENTLY STARTED TO GO BELOW THE SURFACE COMING UP WITH NICE HALF PINT DAIRY, OUT OF STATE BOTTLES AND OTHER HARD TO FIND RARITIES.

MY QUESTION IS, WHAT IS THE SMALLER OF THE TWO IN THE PICTURE BELOW THAT WE DUG UP YESTERDAY. IT'S ABOUT 1.5-2" TALL AND HAS NO MARKINGS OR EMBOSSMENTS AT ALL. LOOKS LIKE A SMALL CREAMER!

THANKS!

Welcome Diggin Doc.
"Local bottle hole", what a quaint phrase. If you've been scratching the surface for years I'd say it's time to DIG, DIG ,DIG!!!
That is a nice milk. Makes one think; What lays beneath!?!

UNFORT ALL THE GOOD BOTTLES IN THIS HUGE HOLE HAVE BEEN PICKED OFF THE SURFACE. HOWEVER, IT AMAZES ME HOW 7 MONTHS OF NEW FOLIAGE COMES AND GOES AND BARES NEW BOTTLES. THE SUCCESS RATE DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR IS KIND OF POOR. FOR EVERY DECENT MILK, CREAMER OR SODA BOTTLE THE HOLE GIVES TO US, IT ALSO GIVES DOZENS AND DOZENS OF LIQUOR, BEER AND CONDIMENT BOTTLES. WISH IT WAS THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

WE ALSO FOUND A BORDEN 1/2 PINT IN DECENT SHAPE. DON'T HAVE A PICTURE, AS IT WENT HOME WITH MY BUDDY...HIS FIND.
HE FOUND THIS AND GAVE IT TO ME SINCE I COLLECT SODEY-POP BOTTLES. NEVER HEARD OF THIS OUT-OF-STATE BRAND BEFORE....

Hey DD, You can't know all the good stuffs gone 'til you hit bottom. That's why it's called Bottle Diggin' and not Bottle Pickin'!

OKAY SO NOW THAT THIS DIGGIN' IS SOMEWHAT NEW TO ME, WHAT TOOLS OF THE TRADE DO YOU SUGGEST?

THE CAMPER SHOVEL WE'RE USING IS TOO ROUGH AT TIMES AND SCRATCHES THE GLASS OR EVEN BREAKS THE BOTTLES.
I'M THINKING A HARD PLASTIC SHOVEL? BUT WHERE DOES ONE FIND SUCH A TOOL? ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I use a little army surplus pick/mattock, either with the original short handle or a long pick handle, for loosening non-productive dirt cover, and a shovel for moving dirt. For bottle digging I use a potato fork. I have two, one with a cut off handle, one with a long handle. Most of my digging has been with just the potato fork.

What the heck do you guess was in that bottle marked undertaker's supply? Used for?

Looks way too small if it was really used in the mortuary business.

embalming fluid? Probably does not take much if it was concentrated. When I worked in the Necropsy lab at the vet school we used formaldehyde to make up formalin for preserving tissue samples. It did not take much formaldehyde mixed in water to make large quantities of preserving fluid.

actually I think that small milk would have been a sample milk that they would give out to give you a tatse of their product. Im prttey sure it would of had paint too but it was washed off. I love digging up milks and displaying them. I think they actually display the best if you know how to do it properly. welcome to the forum.~Joey~

OF THE FEW 1/2 PINTS WE'VE DUG UP RECENTLY, THEY SURE DO CLEAN UP NICELY....LIKE BRAND SPANKIN' NEW. ESP WHEN THE SHOVEL DOESN'T SCRATCH THEM ALL UP!

GONNA HIT A NEW HOLE CLOSE TO THE NEW ONE SHOWED TO US ON SUNDAY TOMORROW OR FRIDAY.

WELL, IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR WHEN THE BOTTLES HOLES AROUND HERE BECOME IMPOSSIBLE IMPASSABLE JUNGLES AND IT'S HAPPENING QUITE FAST WITH THIS MILD WEATHER WE ARE HAVING. I'VE BEEN TO A FEW BOTTLE HOLES THIS ENTIRE PAST WEEK. PROBABLY LUGGED ABOUT 3 DOZEN+ ASSORTED DAIRIES, SODAS, BREWS AND MISC BOTTLES HOME TO CLEAN AND DISPLAY.

MY BEST FINDS WERE 3 BLOB TOPS PROBABLY PRE-1900 INCLUDING A FEW BREWS.

HERE THEY ARE:
