Fresh from the ground.  I have never seen this bottle before, but heard one collector state he believed it was a western bitters.  Have you guys back east seen this before ?  Does anybody have some history on it ??

Embossing reads: TIPTOP BITTERS H R & CO.

The glass color and style of top on this bottle sure look western, but I may be wrong !!!

Thanks

Thanks lobey, what are you basing your value upon ?  Do you have any history on the bottle or company ?

Heck no, sorry. Don't really remember where i even saw one. Pretty sure it wasn't ebay though. Glasshouse I think. I know it's scarce to rare, I date it to the 60's easy. Price guides are in the truck I'll run out after lunch and see if it's in one of them. Killa bottle!

I forgot to mention that it came from a 60's/70's privy and is much greener than the photo suggests.

Saw one at a bottle show but don't remember what the guy wanted for it but it was high. He wasn't a local guy either. There was also a Tip Top Bourbon, wonder if there was ant connection.

Heckler sold two in '95 for 93.50 and 121.00 and Pacific Glasshouse sold one in '97 for $231.00.2 were listed in yellow olive and one in olive amber.

Thanks guys, it appears to be a rare bitters than collectors are not willing to pay for.

cal those auction quotes are over ten years old. i think if it went on the market today it would come close to $400. throw it up on ebay with a 10,000 dollar reserve and see how high it goes.
Lobes.

I agree with Lobey on price now and think $400 is in the ballbark. If you could prove it was Western it would sell for 10 times that.If it were a figural with the same rarity it would bring alot more too.An auction is the only way to know for sure but I think that is good money for a bottle.

Hi Caldigs,
Bottle Pricing Guide by Cleveland 2007 puts your bottle at $400-$500
It's a beauty!

Wrote Heckler a short note on this baby. His reply...
Dear Rich,   I believe we sold one of these in the MacKenzie collection.  Quite rare but not highly desireable.  Regards, Norm, Sr.Not a wealth of info but a little help. I'm waiting on a reply from a western bottle guru, maybe he can pin it down a bit in more detail. Lobes.

I think because the total embossed area of the bottle is contained in fairly small circle is
what keeps the price down for what is an otherwise really nice piece of glass.

It is a beautiful bottle, but I can find no references to it being western. Like most eastern bitters, sodas, meds, etc, many are dug in the west. Those products were shipped here in great quantities during and after the Gold Rush when the transient population of CA was large and mining activity at it's highest. Of course, this trend continued into the later silver and gold boom years, too.
