I seems I' m doing my best digging here in Omaha looking for old ravines behind businesses and homes. I' m digging out a property thats long abandoned and the finds are turning out to be around 1900 or so. I' d like your ideas on ravines and how to ' see' the bottles below the ground, as they were strewn and gathered by rainfall etc. I' m about 1.5 feet below the surface and still turning up old cans, formed bricks and the bottles ! How will i know when to stop and whats the best way to get dirt out of the hole without STANDING UP to do it ! :) -Dave.

if you dont have a probe you should get one. this is what most diggers use to locate stuff underground. i use one about 4 feet long. with a bullet shaped tip.
after awhile you can tell the diff. between glass brick tin ect... also i dont usually find a lot of tin cans with early bottles. dig deeper remember the oldest stuff was pitched first and is on the bottom. if you need a probe built for you get a hold of- jaken- who is a member here. he will build you one to your specs.and ship it to you.they dont cost much .read some earlier posts in digging and finding . lots of good ideas on where to look.

stop when you run out of trash. when you get real deep tie a rope on a five gallon bucket and make the wife tow it up and dump it, thats what i do. is there a poss. that there were outhouses on this property prior to 1900? thats what i like to dig.

You will find that below the layer of tip there is clay/soil that is " different" and does not look messed up, sort of hard to explain but you will get a feel for it.
diggerjeff' s advice is all good there .

It was in a gully as we call them here that I found my first ever bottles, been hooked ever since . I was walking along the top of the same gully (on our land) the other day and found two bottles on top! .
