All,

My bro just found an embossed pint "Petersburg Federal Reformatory Dairy" bottle in mint condition.  He was instantly offered $200 for it by a shrewd local collector.  I told him hold on till I could message out on the forum regarding the market for such bottles.

I am guessing that such prison bottles are scarce, and am thinking this one must be extremely rare based on the interest expressed by the seasoned collector, anybody got a clue on the value of the item?

Thanx in advance, E

I would advise him not to sell it in a hurry. If it is that rare it's a safe bet that the possible buyer is going to find another any time soon.He may get double that, who knows?

Hi Mike -
It may not mean much, but it isn't listed on my Sept. 2003 VA milk listing, which is usually good news. I don't pay a lot of attention to our local milks like I should, but VA milks are quite pricey for some. Is it embossed in a slug area?

Just guessing, I would at least triple that offer. It isn't out of the question, cause it sounds like a good one. I can't give you a definate number though.

Doug has great advice... Hold onto it as long as you can and keep asking around.

I try to reason with him, but when somebody waves cash at him he melts - this is the same guy who sold an open pontil Richmond "Purcell Laboratory" and a very old Farmville "Jackson & Sons" liquor flask (never seen/heard of another one) together for $100.  I coulda killed him, makes me even madder when I recall that I waded right past both bottles on same stretch of a creek we were working and he picked 'em up side-by-side.

Maybe I should offer him $201 for it?  (being smug here).

Meech,

I sent you an e-mail regarding the fate of this bottle, unfortunately my brother needs cash and wants to sell it in near future.

I got a line on where he dug the bottle and likely will hit the dump with him in a couple of weeks - sure would be nice to find one for my own collection.

Thanx, E

Hey E -
Without looking at my books, that Purcell is probably one of two known. Not that there isn't more, just reported. I've never heard of that Farmville flask. Wish I was on the bottle recieving end of that deal or should I say crazy deal.

I'll help you find another milk like that.  I'll send you a reply email in a bit.

Meech,

This Purcell was different than the cylindrical version (think there are two specimens known of that one):  this was a very crude rectangular version about 8" tall with a sweet tulip blob and very rough pontil.  I have never seen reference to another one.  It truely was a "dream bottle"- I was shocked/sickened when he told me he had sold it for next to nothing.

I do know who conned him out of it - a local bottle collecting lady who is big into milk bottles, likely you know her.  She also got the Jackson flask:  I'll bet you even money that she turned around and traded them away for milk bottles (oh the pain...).  I'll e-mail her contact info to ya if you want to follow up on either bottle.

I have a good idea, I mean great idea, who it was that got those. I haven't seen or heard of either bottle being offered around here.  They call those private dealings.

I emailed you with a book of my thoughts.

I'm off to check my books on the Purcell. Do you have one of the few Richmond books... the newer ones? If not, you'll just drool. Full color, thick, hardback, loaded w/ stuff you never see, but may dig in a good pit, history for all known companies with dates, and some prices are listed in these books. The Richmond books are by far the best local books out there. A must have for the local digger/collector/dealer/lover of glass.

PS - I don't think they are still available. I'd have to check.

Hey E -
There is a seperate book for Petersburg bottles by the same author. It's also a hardback, in color and so on. Looking last night, this milk isn't in there either (a good thing).

There are several OP variations of the Purcell Ladd & Co. shown in my books. It's kinda hard to narrow down which one you are refering, but they are all good bottles if scarred.
