Hello, all;
I've been digging on a brushy slope behind a house for a couple of days now and I've found several newer bottles and a nice old Nehi bottle. My problem is the bank is covered with brush, (some of which I have removed) and the ground is a rat's nest of small roots. Every time I probe, I hit a root or a rock, and when I try to use my potato rake to remove the dirt, I hit a bunch of roots.
I think there is a treasure trove of old bottles there, but the roots and rocks are keeping me from it.

Does anyone know what I can do?
Any info is desperately needed and will be greatly appreciated!

Thank You and have a nice day,

I simply use a pair of hand pruners and a folding saw. I have not come across a root to date that could handle that combination of tools. Hope this helps. Slimdigger

The teeth might be a little too large but anything's worth a try. The hand pruners seem to work best on roots up to 1 inch in diameter. You can pick up a pair at a discount store for a couple bucks. Slimdigger

Yes, a keyhole saw with the wood blade would work best.

For dense mat's of small roots an old knife sharpened up on a grinder will do a good job, hard to dig thru mongerel things aren't they .
As for rocks, they are just one thing you have to put up with .

When probing, the smallest pebble is like a boulder.

Ah yes Grasshopper, but patience is a virtue....and a chainsaw is quicker! Actually a nice sharp pair of hand size garden pruners work great. I've given up on bring my Leatherman along, as I've lost 2 of them now! $$$ ouch! lol
