Headed back to the lane we dug last week, real early. As I said this is now fenced off with a gate, loosely chained. Here is my digging buddy, Al Lastovica, closing the gate behind us:

Despite it being closed, I'm afraid rubbish still gets tipped, as you can see:

Standing with my back to the gate, looking down the lane. This was once a little side rail line, connecting up to the main suburban railway line, which runs behind the cement fence (arrow). It must have been filled with rubbish to level it in the 1890s. Our digging sites are in the area to the left of my vehicle. The sun was just coming up ( the photo is looking almost due East).

This is my hole from last week, covered over with boards and a thin layer of soil (fortunately no one had walked over it and been swallowed up by the earth!):

Al was digging a few yards further down the lane & here he is, emerging Hobbit-like from his hole:

It is not easy to enlarge the hole to the side because of a) thick kikuyu grass and b) a layer of clinker stone about 6" below the surface and going down a foot or so (hence the pick-axe!):

This gives some idea of depth, Al has gone down about 5 ft and the bottom is thick clay, another foot or so down:

My haul for the day, not huge but satisfying. Includes a nice hexagonal blue poison, several sauces, a ginger jar lid, some stoneware and my treasure - a complete clay pipe. Will show finds after they have been cleaned, maybe tomorrow !

Hello Dale,

Thanks for taking us along. Looks like some goodies. Looking forward to the "after" photos.

I cannot see myself using the beach umbrella while digging in the hood, as much as I would have liked one on some scorching days.

Meanwhile, a "cold can of whatever" shouldn't be allowed on a bottle dig, even the plastic bottle is preferable...

Cool photos, thanks for showing the area.

It looks as if you could rent a backhoe, drive it right on in and go crazy in there! I'd try to find a way to get some machinery in to do the the hard digging. You'd uncover enough stuff to last you through years of markets!

Looks like a good spot to dig Dale,...Can't wait to see some of the finds cleaned up. Thanks for posting your digs....Humor me a bit with my next question?...Just curious, what gauge are the railways/roads in SA? do they use the American standard gauge (4 ft. 8.5 inches)... between the rails?

@ Plumbata  - Hi Stephen, don't think we haven't dreamed about something like that ! However a) it is on Metrorail property ~ no way they would let us do that and
b) there is a serious cement manhole (which I have arrowed) and a large diameter water pipe leading from it (marked on the photo) going right across to the large buildings in the background, which are SA Railways worksheds.  So, its spade, fork & pick axe I'm afraid

Hi Tony, Indeed ! Actually this is a site with considerable potential. Despite having to dig fairly limited holes, I have had about 4 ginger jars, several ginger beers and at least 3 printed potlids from the lane, plus a goodly haul of ordinary stuff. + very sore wrists !

Those are pretty neat to collect Dale. What is the diameter of it?

Hi Tony, it's 3" in diameter. They were the same company that made the lovely little green perfume bottles with the crown stoppers:

And yes, you are right, pot lids are a particularly nice addition to a collection. These are some of the lids I've managed to put together.
