Back to the lane which features in SA 1 and SA 2. Unfortunately didn't have camera along, but intend to take it on Monday. Lo & behold - they had bulldozed all the vegetation and put in a long trench for a new water pipe - and there was glass (broken & whole) all over! Spent 4 hours working through some of the piles of earth they had dumped and also did a bit of digging in the trench - but don't want to interfere with their work.
Here is some idea of what I brought home in my van :

Probably the treasure of the dig ~ a sealed Dutch Case Gin "A C Nolet" of Schiedam ~ held by a tired but very happy digger!

Will post some more detailed pictures once they have had a bit of a clean-up. Happy ? You bet ~ especially as someone else had done the hard digging !

How fortunate is that! Right place at the right time as it appears.

As for me...I know that dang dump is around here somewhere...You are encouraging me to keep looking.

Congrats on the great find! Looking forward to the clean-up shots. Ray

I spy some real goodies in there!  Can't wait to see them cleaned up.  Good work, Dale.

Hot Ziggity, Dale,

Flip that image over, and you nearly have a V for Victory, which it is in spades, or a U for "ugh, my back hurts," which might be part of the equation, as well.

quote:

Lemme axe you, sir, do you comb through the whole pile, or how, exactly, do you approach those lovely dirt piles with shards and bottles sprinkled? I've been fortunate enough to roll up on some great piles, but certainly not so initially bountiful. I always debate the approach to harvesting such a pile, and marvel at what survives being thrown away, mechanically ripped from the ground, and re-dumped...

I note your concern with the contractor's trench. I've had to struggle to refrain from really going to town in parallel situations. Hat's off to you, and looking forward to the après bath views.

I'm already fidgeting about the triumphal return on Monday. Monday? Is this more restraint, or is real life cutting into digging adventure?

Hi Surface, thanks ~ yes it is "real life" in the form of the Flea Market, which I do Saturdays & Sundays.
As far as the dumped heaps are concerned, fortunately they are not too huge (hope to have pictures on Monday). I use a garden fork ( the long handled 4 prong type) and start at the outer fringes and turn the soil. gradually working my way to the centre ( with much huffing & puffing!)
