Hi Hunter2000,

I've been digging one site this summer and came across many such pieces and have had great success using a wire brush on a drill. I place the drill in a vice so it won't move so a bench grinder with a wire brush wheel is the best but it works like a charm! The wire takes ALL the crap off without hurting the silver. They come so clean the only thing I now need to do is perhaps polish them.

Just be sure to keep a good grip on your work piece - they can take off for the Great White North pretty damned quick! Gloves are a good idea but they also can catch easily on the wire - I ruined a couple that way. Now I go bear handed and use band-aids as needed!

I suppose you could try reverse osmosis but it takes a lot longer.

Brian

if its silver it will be marked...  Most of the stuff is silver plate and deteriorated.  If its true sterling or nickle silver, any solid silver it will not be corroded like the spoon in your pic though.  Real silver you can wet and rub on your jeans and it will polish right up with a little elbow grease.  Id say for every 10 plated pieces I find I find a solid piece.  I save them and make stuff out of them...

this used to be a sterling spoon dug in a toc dump

And don't forget that some of the older silverware was made of coin silver. Definitely look for the makers mark and the hallmarks, if any. Some of those old spoons can be worth some cash.
