Ummmm...are you certain an that opening is for an ink well? How about a big black candle You might have an ceremonial artifact from a satanic cult And what about that 38?, if it was thrown in a lake, isn't it likely that it was used for nefarious purposes, and disposed of?

Interesting thoughts, Maine Digger What I imagine is that the second missing "wing" combined with the one present served as a rest for pens laid crosswise on it, rest them on those little indentations on the wing......... I've seen other old desk sets where there were pen rests behind the inkwell, and that some sort of glass or metal inkwell went behind Satan's head.

The 32 cal. revolver was found in a lake across mainstreet from where the "lord of darkness" resided.At least it is safe to say they are not connected!My best guess is some sort of inkwell, but If I were checking into a hotel back then and this thing was sitting on the front desk, I think I'd be heading up the street to shall we say, a lighter environment.Keep the guesses comning!
