Hey insulator guys,

Anybody know anything about this insulator? Was picked up as part of a bottle collection.
Its not threaded inside.
Small hole through side with a little rust on the inside

Any info on the age/maker/value would be greatly appreciated?

Believe it or not, I think it's an early car ashtray!

These beautiful slag glass ashtrays are frequently mistaken for threadless insulators due to their very similar shape.  The hole in the side is for the connection of a suction cup to allow attachment to a car dashboard.  These come in many other color combinations than the two examples shown and they are a collectable themselves!  We think that these were made by HouzeX Glass products.  Versions with 10 flat sides are made by Akro Agate and 8 sided ones are attributed to Westite.

WOW
Never would have thought. Figured it went on a post and a was screwed through the hole due to lack of inner threads. Crazy.
Do you think there any real value to these?
Awesome colors, would make a nice collection.

Thanks for the info JOE, this is the reason I love these forums!

You're welcome Travis....they're pretty unusual,...I haven't happened across any yet, but I remember having the same reaction when I learned what they were.

Well, I've always heard they were in Model T's and model A's  So that would cover 1908. (the year my father was born) to 1931...Not sure they used them in every one of those model years though...

After the Ford period, I think these were sold as an after-market item as late as the 1950s.

Well Joe, thanks for the history lesson! I would have laid odds it was an insulator too. You learn something on here all the time!
