Today was tuff
I tell you it still is this very moment....
Rhett and I met about 14 years ago in the St. Francis Animal Hospital.  He got to big for an elderly women.  I guess cause he wasn't a pure breed nobody adopted him.  I was told he wouldn't of had long especially being there over six month's.  The minute she opened the door and I saw him I knew...... I said sit...he sat....I said laydown....he did.  We were together everyday for 14 years....he was my best friend.... after the vet left I set him in is resting place with a great blanket and some flowers out of the garden.  I placed a 200 lb granite headstone in his honor.  Whether I live here forever or not You'll know your moving Rhett's stone.  I went diggin then.....He would have expected me too!  Rhett today's digs are for you buddy

RAINBOW BRIDGE

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

You guys are making me feel like I should never get a dog - it hurts too much when they die! Sorry for your loss Privy - maybe his spirit can pass in to a new pup that is waiting for you to rescue him from a pen somewhere :)

Sorry to hear about Rhett. It sounds like he had a long, happy life. My dog and cat are my two kids. I would do just about anything for them.

Nice dig, I've never found three hutches in one pit. We have them here, but they don't turn up very often. ~Jim

I have always loved animals but the one I have now is my all time favorite.  She is my little girl.  She is a pug named Pebbles.  She greets me every day when I get home, I pick her up and she hugs me, rubbing her face against mine.  She follows me around like a shadow and no matter who has her or what she's doing, when I am near, she is right there by my side.  I truly am sorry about Rhett.

Please tell me what that little "shrew" looking thing is in the picture.  Very interesting.  Awsome digs.

yip God bless our four legged friends!
I recently had a kitty die on me (just as winter was ending) and it was pretty horrible! 5:30 in the morning I'm somewhere near half awake and praying for death when I hear a blood curdling howl, followed by the equally heart stopping screech of my daughter ~DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD~ who was busy banging around getting ready for school. I come flying into the kitchen with a baseball bat, heart pounding, not knowing if she stubbed her toe or someone was dragging her out the window and find her staring at the floor in front of the fridge. Jesus Christ in a kilt playing the bagpipes what's going on I says.....something's wrong with Poochie she says. I look and yes something indeed is wrong with my scraggly little buddy. He's laying flat on his side gulping air like a trout in the grass, eyes half closed and staring at a far off place.  The kid, tears just brimming in her eyes says, did you hear him? Christ yeah I did, I thought to myself...damn near froze my heart in my chest.  I just nodded. One look was all it took to determine the Pooch was on his way to the happy hunting ground. I plop my ass down in front of him and let him sniff my hand, I had a feeling his seeing days were behind him. Sat like this for about five minutes with my fingers about a quarter inch from his nose while I slowly stroked hid ratty fur from his neck to his hinf quarters. Not much else to do right? I think i brought him a little comfort though. His last moments where heart breaking. He started to kind of run in place while laying on his side, taking short gulps of air.  Thought to myself  he's chasing mice in heaven and had to bit my lip stop myself from laughing insanely, would have scared the kid I think. His little jog went on for about a minute which seemed like an hour and he left this silly world. Like someone shut off his light switch. Lights out.
I got this cat and his twin brother from a buddy when they where tiny, tiny, tiny. they both followed me around the house like little shadows. About the third day I had them I was at the sink washing the never ending dirty dishes when the ex walks in to say hi. I turn on the heels of my work boots to shoot her a dirty look and plant my toe down right on the head of one of the brothers. The poor thing spun around on the floor like Curly from the Stoodges. The first traumatic incident in young Poochie's life. There where many. Knocked over a fan in the middle of the night and broke his leg. Screen door slammed on his tail and bent it pretty good. Got in a tussle with the neighbors pitbull and damn near got his head torn off. Came home with a big flap of fur and skin hanging off his neck like and open bookcover. Duct taped him up and off he went. Came home two weeks later, the tape was a wrinkled necklace around his neck and you couldn't tell were the injury was. He was the king of the cats in the neighborhood and defended his territory fiercely. He looked like a cartoon. Round notches in his ears, a broken fang, wicked claws and fast as lightning. I tried to keep him in the house but he wouldn't here of it, hence the broken tail. Hie rein lasted about ten years then age and old injuries caught up with him. He came into the house two or three times a day to eat, sleep check things out but his kingdom was outside. One day he just came home and stayed there. Never left the house again. For the first time I had to set up a cat box. He lost weight so we switched to soft canned food, that helped. Stayed in the house, his new kingdom for a little over three years.
Over the thirteen and a half years of his life he was as good a cat as a cat gets. He did his thing I did mine, slept at the foot of the bed (either mine or the girl's) and was no bother. Haven't thought about him in awhile but I miss that cat.

This has to be my longest post ever

Sorry to hear about Rhett. I've always had pets, dogs and cats. It always hurts when it's thier time to go, but at least you know he had a good long life. You saved him from certain doom. It's always harder when thier time is cut short, like with an illness or injury. Always cherish the memories. Looks like you had a good dig to help get your mind off things. Chris
