Got some new stuff today thanks to epackage, slag pile digger, and pikewaynepabottles. They met to exchange some bottles, and each had a couple for me. Jim gave me these amazing Cardinell Ink Out's, Ed (pikewaynepabottles) gave me these STARTLING Ransley deco sodas, and Mike gave me a tooled crown Greason variant I didn't have, unfortunately it's broken. THANKS GUYS!

First are the freak Ransley deco sodas. I thought the Art Deco movement started in the 20's; however, Ransley seems to have been quite the innovator. These sodas almost certainly date to before 1915, when Ransley went out of business. Not only do I have a tooled crown top from Ransley that I can prove dates to 1895, but it also seems Ransley was one of the first to design his soda bottles in a fancy way. Now that I think about it, it almost seems too good to be true. "J.W. Ransley & Son Co." went out of business completely before 1915, and had been downsizing before that. Maybe Ransley (or his son) started from scratch some time during the 20's, which could explain these bottles. I have a hard time believing they could be pre-1915.

On both sides of the bottle in the middle, it says "RANSLEY'S INC.". On the heel, they each say "G23". Could this be a date code for 1923, contradicting what I thought I knew about Ransley? The heel also says "EAST ORANGE N.J.", and "6088", which is probably an irrelevant mold number. The base says "CONTENTS/ 6 FL. OZS./ REGISTERED". They're badly case worn, but I bet these bottles are far rarer than the blob Ransley's I have.

I found a 1925 patent that somewhat resembles the soda, ideas?

Jim gave me some Ink Out bottles from Montclair. I didn't have any, so I'm glad to have them. They add some nice color to the collection, at very least. This one's a nice bell shape.

I doubt there's a nicer Ink Out bottle out there than this one. And I doubt there's a nicer guy out there than Jim! It comes sealed in the original metal tube, with the original non screw cap top! I love this thing!

The tube isn't even rusted. How often do you see something like this?

My Rush's Bitters bottle from eBay arrived today, to make it even better. It's in great condition, but I took a gamble on the listing, as the seller was unclear about the condition. I think this drove some people away, so I got it for the low price of $30! One side is embossed "A.H. FLANDERS. M.D./ NEW YORK".

The bottle has a drippy applied flask top. I don't know what it's really called, is it a collared ring or something? It has some bad content stain that bar keepers friend and copper shaking didn't even dent... The bottle is soaking in muriatic right now.

Wish I had started when I was young ... The bottle diggers I know taunt me about the dump I'm digging now... They're probably exaggerating to make me jealous, but they said you used to be able to just walk around and pick up local blobs from the ground! If I was collecting bottles when I was 5, I wouldn't have missed out on that...

Yeah, funny about that shoulder. The early machines were crude, so I guess that's why that manufacturing flaw happened. Adds character to the bottle.

December 31, 1915 is when the NY Times was advertising the auction sale of the entire firm, so that year is the absolute latest the bottles could be.

John W. Ransley was born 1847, so I think he is unlikely to have been the owner of a revived Ransley firm, assuming one ever existed after the 1915 end date. I have no proof that anyone ever revived the Ransley business, but I'm just putting the idea out there.

William Ransley, his son and partner in the business, was born in 1871. So he would've been in his 50's if a Ransley soda water firm resurfaced in the 20's. All these dates make sense to me, but I think I'll have to arrange them into a sort of timeline if others are to be able to follow my train of thought. I think I'll post this in the Soda forum, and see if I get any help regarding the deco shape.
